More gay marriage stuff (not having to do with Nola) pissing me off

What irks me more than anything about the gay marriage thing is people who are trying to be progressive and talk about changing the definition so that "marriage" is the religious joining, while contrafibularity or whatever is the secular joining.  It's dumb.  The religious joining already HAS a separate term - it's called "matrimony".  "Marriage" has ALWAYS been the social construct that doesn't necessarily imply anything religious, at least as long as the language has been roughly the way it is now.  It's like the socially charged version of people forgetting that the English language already includes the word "give" and making "gift" into a verb.

  • And people look at me all weird when I just say that marriage is a legally binding contract between two people...

    This. Exactly.

It's a contract, pure and simple.

I still think the '2 wedding' thing they do in parts of Europe would be a good thing.  Always have.

That way your legal commitment is clearly separate from the religious one.

The only downside I've seen from the separate thing is that some (normally super-fundie) cultish groups tend to frown on doing the civil thing and do just the religious thing.

All fine and dandy until the woman gets 'uppity' enough to try to leave and has no legal protections and is left penniless (because everything was always in the man's name)
