Wedding Woes

Laminate flooring?

Have any of you done laminate flooring in your house?  Did you install it yourself or have someone do it for you?   Where did you shop around for pricing?

We're thinking of doing our living areas (kitchen, entry/front area (it's not really a hall), and living room) in laminate.  Our carpet is gross and we think it will help the value of the house when we do decide to sell.

DH knows a guy at work who installs floors as his side-job and said he would come and do the rough-ins/perimeter to get us started for $100 if we did it ourselves.

Just looking for people's real life experiences.  TIA.  ;)

Re: Laminate flooring?

  • Do you mean like linoleum or snap and lock type laminate?  DH has done the wood laminate in the old house with no problem.  He actually did lino pretty easily too.  My BIL did a snap and lock tile looking pretty easily too.  I will say DH and BIL are both pretty handy and they have the right tools.

  • Yes, that's probably what we'd go for.  It looks pretty easy to install.   I'm hoping we could get it done in a weekend.  We have about 500+ sq feet to do.
  • I have a friend who has little to no handyman experience.  He needed to sell his house and wanted to up the value.  He and then GF (who was the reason he was moving, now his wife, and also very little handyman XP) were able to do nearly the entire house of 1500 sq feet by themselves.  It took them about a week, I think, once they got it all figured out and working around jobs/obligations.
  • we did it in our kitchen, I can scare up the pics if it's helpful.
All in all, it was a few days, not to bad of a job.

(can't speak for prices, ours was hand-me-down-free)
  • I have it in my dining room, and paid someone, but you already know my skill level is zero.

  • We did it in our living room last summer. We used the brand that costco carries, they run sales on it a couple of times a year, and on sale the square foot price was really good and it already had the padding attached.

My dad, brother, and DH got it put in in 2 weekends.
  • Our kitchen and living room is the snap and lock kind but it was here when we moved in.
  • DH put Pergo in our living room and dining room (now playroom) around the time we got married.  He did it himself, after much cursing, tools bought, ADD-induced unfinishedness for months, etc.  I was seriously afraid this project would derail the wedding, but somehow, we made it.
