Relish tray?

I'm going to the old lady club cook-out tonight.  The hostess asked me to bring a relish tray for the hamburgers (but "no pickles, I already have pickles").  She suggested lettuce and onions.  What else should be on there?  I feel weird showing up with a plate of lettuce and onions.  I'll add tomato if I can find some good ones.

This sounds just like hamburger toppings, not a relish tray.   In my world a relish tray includes carrots, celery, brocolli, mushrooms, etc.

WTF is a relish tray anyway? Are tehre a bunch of different kinds?

and yeah - sounds like burger toppings. I'd include cheese. maybe different kinds of cheese (but nothing too crazy - cheddar, swiss, and blue?).

    Relish. Blech.

No, I agree that this is not a relish tray.  That is hostesses label.  I would have brought a tray of pickles and olives if she hadn't said, "you know, lettuce, onions..."

Lettuce, onions, tomatoes, cheese, ketchup, mustard, actual relish, mayo. Maybe those pre-cooked bacon slices and mushrooms? Peppers?

I'd bring messed up stuff, to prove that she was wrong.  But I'm a b*tch.

Okay, that is a lie.  I'd *want* to bring messed up stuff.

I had no idea what a relish tray was either until I read the Martha article.  I always called it a crudite plate.  Now I feel pretentious.
