How does that even work in reality?  I mean you'd have to take a vacation day and I bet most people would be texting and internetting.

At this point, I think it's impossible for most of the civilized world to do.

But then again, there are still religious people who take vows of silence and keep them for a lifetime, so it is possible, if not practical.

I took a 24 vow of silence for a college class once.  It was terrible.  TERRIBLE.  I really like to talk.

H is a talker. He can't handle silence and road trips are the worst. On one trip to visit family I got thoroughly annoyed with H and like a baby he huffed and said he wouldn't say another word until we reached City. It was an hour and a half of peace. The second H saw the city limit sign it was as if the floodgates had opened.

I can't be silent all day - I have a kid. Talking is necessary.
