Wedding Woes

work departure conundrum

Tomorrow is my unofficial last day at this consulting place I've worked for about 2 years.  Things have been really weird lately. Borderline hostile sometimes.

I officially switched from FTE to consulting about a month ago. So I was gone but not gone. The company (that is, the boss and a couple of his minions) is being a total d1ck about a couple of things. Not paying me on time, for one. Continuing to use my name, photo, and credentials in sales materials (Yeah, I'm livid about that, but there's not much I can do.), stuff like that.

But I figure hey, the rest of the rank and file are cool. I like them. We're FB friends, stuff like that. But even then, some of them have been avoiding eye contact when I say good morning (weird). So I don't know WTF is going on.

So part of me wants to turn in my key tomorrow and run out singing the Ballad of Steven Slater (www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zCtlHvMu3o). But the smarter part is all "don't burn bridges. People move. They're not all bad. blah blah."

For the latter, I could send a nice departure email, or I could just sortof disappear (which is what usually happens around here).

WDWWT?

Re: work departure conundrum

  • I say just leave. A nice email probably won't change anything. If they are going to call you for work they have probably already decided. Besides, i would have a hard time not writing snarky stuff in there. :) of course, it won't take very much time, so do it if you want. Extremely unhelpful, I know.

  • I wouldn't turn in my key until I had (1) been paid and (2) been removed from all advertising.  To the point I would throw a tantrum or cause a big scene in the middle of the floor a la Jerry Maguire.

  • What Nico said. You need to hold on to *something* until you get paid/they stop using you to advertise.

The thing is, I won't know if they're using me in sales presentations or not. All I can really do is make it VERY clear on my linkedin profile and elsewhere that I am independent.

I sure as hell won't be turning anything in until I get paid, though. I have been assured that I will have a check in hand on Friday. We shall see.
