Wedding Woes

ARG...colors HELP!

So, I went wedding dress shopping yesterday and invited my mother to come with me. She isn't the wedding type lady, so I didn't think she would want to come....but she did. And when she came, she changed my whole wedding around!!! I know people are always talking about how their mothers are taking control of their whole wedding, etc...but I never thought my mom would do this! I haven't really shared any of my planning stuff with her because she thinks I am silly even to have a wedding at all (my parents were married in a courthouse with a ring from a gum ball machine) So anyway, I told my bridal consultation lady that my colors were red, black and white and my mom said "oh no no no, I hate red in weddings. It looks too much like valentine's day" I guess I should have known, she is a very opinionated woman. Anyway, she went around David's Bridal and picked out the colors she thinks I should have: Purple and Champagne.
I'm not too attached to my original colors, other than I thought it would be cute to incorporate future hubby's love of red wings hockey...Oh ok, I love the red wings too.

But I am not extremely attached to it, it was just the first thing I thought of. Now, however, my mom has got me all confuzzled. Should I do purple and champagne? I like the combo, but I don't know what to do!!! My mother and father have yet to discuss if they are going to help me pay for the wedding (if they aren't going to pay, they are going to help a lot with the planning) so I don't know if I have to take her advice or not. When I left her, she said that it was my wedding and that I should do whatever I want, but she hates red in weddings.
I don't want my mom to hate my wedding... so I have been putting together some inspiration boards for purple and champagne (or light gold).
What do you think?

I don't want it to look like the Vikings colors, so I have to make sure the gold is lighter.
I thought I had everything almost figured out...then this happened.

Your mother isn't paying for the wedding. Pick the colors you want. And unless you cut out hearts in pink and red and hang them from the cieling with cherubs and boxes of chocolates everywhere it's not going to look like Valentine's Day. It will look like a wedding.

Asking internet strangers is just going to get you even more unneeded opinions (I personally think incorporating sports team colors into a wedding is silly)...you need to do what you want to do.

<div>i was greeted by that sight in a public restroom the other day. It would make a fantastic wedding theme - think of all of the water saved by guests who don't flush. </div>

Do you think this is the ONLY opinion your opinionated mother is going to have about your wedding? You need to go with your originally plan. If you decide you do like your mom's idea fine, but you're going to have to learn to say "no" at some point. Only YOU can let your mom take over your wedding.

    Thanks!

I guess I'm getting a reality check on exactly how moms can be during a wedding...

Oh and *Barbie* you might want to update your signature... maybe mention something about the Penguins getting eliminated by an 8th seed.

I can't - TK hasn't let me update since early in the 2nd round.
The Habs didn't eliminate the Pens (or the Caps for that matter) - the Pens eliminated themselves - it's what happens when you outplay the other team for 55/60 minutes and then take a nap and let in 2 goals - or don't bother to show up for the first 30 minutes of game 7.

Yeah, similar issues with the Wings. They lose three games to the Sharks and then beat them 7-1, then lose the 5th game. It is so sad when you know they can win, but they just don't try hard enough.

Habs had an incredible run this last season.

no they didn't - they had insane goaltending from Halak through rounds 1 and 2.

SMDH @ not being able to beat the Sharks in the playoffs though - they choke every year. (reg. season is a different story...) I was amazed they made it to the 3rd round.

I like both color combos a lot. (red looks GREAT in weddings, especially flowers)

Still, since you're just starting your planning and you're not 100% sold on either one, it sounds like you need to continue exploring color options! Your FI should help too :)

@ lorita- Thanks for the encouragement, I will keep thinking about it. It is like me to freak when I come upon a problem. And I think FI should be more interested...but he isn't.

@ Barbie- I said their run was incredible, as in unexpected.
Yeah, not too big of a Sharks fan right now...lol but oh well, I'm not one to keep grudges.

It's YOUR wedding, and YOU are the bride, so you have whatever colors your heart desires. If your mother doesn't like red, then she can just deal with it. Everyone has colors they don't particularly like but we all deal with it don't we? And red does not have to look like Valentine's Day. You can see tons and tons of pictures that include red as a main color, and they are very chic and bold. It's a strong color. Personally, both red and purple are my favorite colors so it was either one for my wedding (very torn between the colors, but I think I'm going with dark purple). But red would be beautiful. I went to a wedding last year where red was the color and it was wonderful--I never thought of Valentine's Day even once!
Bottom line--you are the bride, and you get whatever you want for your special day. If your mom really wants you to be happy, she can bite her tongue and have her own wedding done the way she wants since she never had one. If you pick a color just because she told you to, that will always be in the back of your mind and you'll always remember it like that--probably when you look back on it in pictures too.
I've never heard anything good come out of mothers or mother-in-laws taking over the bride's wedding. Be strong! Just go with whatever will make you happy, whichever color it may be.
