I saw them on the Today Show.  I can see both sides of this.  I don't think a PRIVATE school is wrong to set standards.  However, my understanding is that there is no morality clause that she signed.

and seriously, it was 3 weeks difference - she could have gotten away with lying about it, and at least she was honest.

I think the fact that they asked her this was a HIPA (HIPPA?) violation or at least a privacy violation.

i'm hoping they're forced to re-instate her and give her back pay for the time she was gone.

I saw this earlier and immediately assumed she had signed a morality clause. Now I think the school may have just wanted an excuse to get rid of her. Why did the school need to know when she conceived her child? And conceiving three weeks before the wedding, BFD. Major side-eye for telling parents and students she was fired for premarital sex. Morality clause or no, there's no reason to divulge personal info about an employee matter.

I was SMDH @ the last line...“We request that Jarretta withdraw her complaint and consider the testimony of the Lord,” the letter concludes.

In this state - you can be fired or evicted if someone percieves you to be homosexual. I know it is not the same, but it pisses me off. I guess I should call Advocate and ask them to send me my mag in the wrapper again.

<div>I wonder what the policy is in TX? I can't see them being more welcoming than OK. </div><div>

Barbie - I don't think it violates any HIPPA laws, but rather general employment discrimination laws. HIPPA is more how medical professionals disclose info. If her doc had blabbed, then yes, HIPPA. If her employer asked, then it's an employment law issue - I think.

Barbie - I wasn't aware of the laws when I was in TX. Since I have more time now that I am done with school, I'm becoming more aware of the particulars. The pride parage is this month. I'm excited.

yeah - i'm not sure where they draw the line in regards to medical-related info. (i.e. how much needs to be disclosed about a medical condition - is asking someone the date of conception more info than needed if they say i need medical leave, i'm due___, and does the person disclosing the info matter - a doctor vs. individual. i should start reading those HIPPA disclosures better )

I agree with you on it being discrimination - you could look at it from the pregnancy angle ( they made an excuse to fire her so they didn't have to find a sub for her leave) or just from the standpoint that she didn't sign a morality clause. (and really, who is to determine what is "moral"?)

The school acted unethically by disclosing her medical condition/reason for termination as well.

Huh. When I was a kid my principal was fired for going back to her maiden name after she divorced. I guess I feel like when you work for a school that has strong values you should know that the expectation to act within those values comes with the territory.

DH had to write a memo this year on discrimination. Currently the federal laws for discrimination do not include sexual preference. Gender roles yes: so you can sue if your employer fired you for being too masculine (if you are female) or too feminine (if you are male) but if you're homosexual, you're out of luck. Hopefully the laws will catch up soon, it's pretty disgusting.

Dukis - if there was some sort of morality clause, totally. You're right.

Barbie - you have to sign a disclosure for a doctor to release ANY of that info. If you blab, it's on you. HIPPA came out back in the day (Clinton) when people were trying to fire folks for having AIDS.

The HIPPA thing is pretty loosey goosey. My mom was having problems getting an x-ray of my grandfather's foot. Meanwhile, Dr. HS will ask me right in the waiting room if I need anything refilled. Last time I said yes, XANAX please.

HIPAA laws only apply to healthcare agencies - doctors, hospitals, insurance companies, etc.

And Min - when I worked at a hospital, if we saw someone we knew in the hall, we couldn't ask them what they were up to due to HIPAA rules & regs. And Dr. HS shouldn't be asking you anything within earshot of other people.

Myrtle - I know he shouldn't. He's got like 12 different things wrong going on where he is at. But, he is loved and no one cares or knows better. I mean, if I were asking for valtrex, I might care. But heck, it's xanax. People knowing I take that it like the one thing I don't worry about.

    I find this strange.

There were at least 5 lesbians that worked at my middle school. One was the principal.

What is the BFD? They were all excellent teachers. Who they sleep with, whether they get pregnant or not without the benefit of marriage, etc., is their business. Not the school's.
