Wedding Woes

Holy Hell and a confession

Confession:  I'm becoming addicted to Dr. Phil.

Holy Hell: Today's topic is teen bullying.  Phoebe Prince is the teen that recently committed suicide.  After her death kids were mocking her.  AFTER her death they were pretending to hang themselves.  SIX DAYS after her death they had a cattilion.  AFTER her death they trashed a facebook page that had been set up as a memorial.

Where the hell are these kids parents?

19 students have been indicted in her death.

    WHAT?!

Do these little heathens have parents? WTF?

And as sad as it is, I don't think any of this kids could be reahbilitated and be 'normal'.

What are they being charged with?

While I'm not saying these kids are right in any way, I seriously wonder about the knee-jerk reaction to indict bullies when kids kill themselves. Is bullying right? No, of course not. But these kids were obviously troubled above and beyond the bullies - why didn't anyone see that? Why aren't the parents being similarly blamed? They LIVED with their kids. They didn't see anything wrong? Not even a little bit? I lived three hours away from my parents when I almost offed myself, and my mom knew I wasn't feeling well.

Also, the world is a cruel place. Bullies exist everywhere. If I quit my job because of a bully boss, should I press charges against her? For what? There has to be some sort of toughening up that happens IN ADDITION TO addressing bullying cultures in schools.

I KNOW.  It scares the crap out of me.

BFF's older daughter is in 6th grade and she just let her join FB.  Then she FB grounded her for joining in when some of her other friends were teasing some girl about her "lesbian lovers."  SIXTH GRADE.

Was sixth grade this bad when I was there?  I feel like this would have been an 8th grade thing, maybe 7th, but maybe I'm misremembering.  In retrospect, it's shocking, regardless of the exact grade.

I do think FB makes it so much easier to gang up on someone.  I never, never would have gone up to some classmate and been like, "What's up with all of your lesbian lovers?"  But if my friends started it on FB, I probably would have joined in to try to be part of the group.  It wasn't until sometime in high school that it clicked for me how stupid stuff like that was.

You know, I had to meet with four girls a few days ago about this. It blows my mind how mean and hateful some people can be, really it does.

i've missed the exact charges, but the DA said it was above and beyond "normal."  The girl's mom knew there was bullying, but couldn't get the school to respond.  I don't know why she didn't pull her kid out, but that's hind sight.

I do wonder how much of it is defense.

I mean, if you quit 'teasing' her you have to acknowledge that you shouldn't have been doing it before.
And that opens the floodgate to guilt (highly appropriate guilt but...still, hard for adults to do, let alone KIDS)

Sorry, 9 students.  Charges are criminal bullying and violations of civil rights.

One more addition: criminal harrassment, some statutory rape, stalking

My school has been having a lot of issues with students harassing others on FB lately. (Setting up groups to trash students, etc.)  Well, Yesterday after I heard some of my kids talking about "making websites about people" I lost it and spent a good 15 minutes chewing them out about how utterly despicable that BS was and how disgusted I was that someone could even contemplate doing something like that to be funny.

As I am typically the "nice" teacher, they were very, very quiet after that.  Hopefully SOMETHING got through.
