Help me plan the Mad Men party

This Sunday!

Show starts at 8, I told people early that the party would start at 7.  Should I go earlier?  6 to make it clear that dinner is involved?  Or just leave it at 7 because 3 hours of togetherness will be enough?

Drinks: I plan on having wine, beer, martinis and some old cans of Coke hiding in the back of the closet.

Food:  I was thinking heavy whore derbs, maybe with a concentration on things that were popular and trendy in the 60s, but I can only think of jello with meat in it and that doesn't seem finger friendly.  Or I could work with  words associated with the show, like by making chicken cigars and tracking down some Utz chips.

However, for the love of Kuus, I will not be making these cigars:  http://allrecipes.com/recipe/rabbit-loin-cigars/detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=cigars&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=Home%20Page

Re: Help me plan the Mad Men party

  • I have no advice, but I do want to say that I hope TV watching parties catch on.

  • Oooh, I found this suggestion:

     'Mad Men' Menu

    Stork Club Cocktails, served punch-style*
    Trader Vic's Mai Tais*
    Martinis
    Classic Shrimp Cocktail*
    Trader Vic's Crab Rangoon *
    California Onion Dip and Chips
    Chex Mix
    Jerry's Deviled Eggs*
    Toasted Parmesan
    Canapes*

I can easily do shrimp cocktail, chex mix and deviled eggs.  Will the theme be evident or will everyone think that I'm 80 years old?

  • deviled eggs
    pigs in a blanket
    mini quiches
    fondue
    crockpot swedish meatballs

btw -- will you be asking people to dress in cocktail attire?

  • if you do one molded jello salad (for looks only), i think people will get it.

if you serve 6's mil's lime fluff, people will think you are old/crazy.

i think 7pm is a good start time. less pressure on everyone. go with 6pm if you want an early night. or, a later night if poeple start their drinking early and get sloshed and forget to leave. whatever works for you.

make a jello mold with fruit in it. not random meat. you can pay homage to the 60's without making people vomit on your carpet.

i do like the picture of the hot dogs sticking straight out of the bowl of beans. good for dipping!

  • You must do bacon wrapped scallops. so very very 60s.

  • Wzzz - I'm getting new carpet next Tuesday.  So if anyone wants to vomit, they are more than welcome.  The pot of weiners might do that for me.

I wasn't going to ask anyone to dress up because I don't plan on doing it.  I would have to go shopping and I don't really feel like doing that.  One friend said she would be wearing go-go boots.  I was polite and did not point out that she is jumping the time-line by a season or two.  Or maybe intends to come as someone's funky ahead-of-the-curve arist girlfriend.  I guess I can say in my next e-mail that dressing up in welcome but by no means required.

  • For some reason I think meatloaf when I think 60's. I do love some good meatloaf.

  • I think the theme will be evident.   But, honestly, as long as you have the cocktails I don't think you need to be themey with the food.   Just do some apps that you'd eat anywya.  I always try to be themey with the food, and no one else (A) gets it, or (B) cares as much as I do.
I think starting an hour early is fine if you're just doing heavy appetizers.   If you were doing a full out dinner, I would say that you should start at 6.

Is it OK if I spend the night?  I was just going to drive back home after the show ended, but if I'm having cocktails I probably shouldn't drive.   ;)

Also, I've only watched through season 2, episode 2.  Do you think I have time to get caught up?
  • I wish I would have started planning earelier so that I could order candy cigarettes.

  • AF - Clear the calendar and get caught up.  Quit your job, pawn of the kid, whatever you have to do!  And yes, you can spend the night.  Then in the morning you can help me clean up the meat jello stains.

  • Hmmmm...  Maybe if I stop playing games on my phone/ipod, then maybe I'd have time to get caught up without quiting my job...

And I have a jello mold you can use.   It's authentic 60's, too.   Complete with crazy 60's recipe ideas.

  • Min - It's true.  I am about as white as they come.
