Wedding Woes

I have a confession

Today is free Chik-Fil-A day, and I'm thinking of taking a sandwich.  The street in front of our building is all torn up, so getting in and out is a huge PITA right now--flaggers, mud, etc.  Eating a sandwich that had been delivered would be so easy.  It would make me a sell-out, but a sell-out who didn't have to fight her way out of this office park 10 minutes each way just to get a non-homophobic lunch.

If I rationalize it, I can always argue that the sandwiches are already paid for, and it doesn't matter to Chik-Fil-A whether I take one or not.  But it still feels unprincipled.

Re: I have a confession

  • I confess that I'm sooooooo tired of this CFL debate. I roll my eyes every time I see a CFL post on fb. I think it's time to move on to the next thing that's going to outrage the country.

  • Agreed, NOLA.  I don't like the sentiment behind it, but honestly...why ask someone something like this...and then get upset when they state their opinion?

I suppose he could have deferred answering.

gah, i agree with NOLA so hard.

i really don't get the uproar. i am sure if we saw what is in everyone's head, no one would ever go into a business and spend their money ever again. it reminds me of that scene in dogma where matt damon and ben aflek call out everyone at the conference table.

    yes!
  • The only reason why I think this matters is b/c of Citizen's United.  Since CFA is considered a "person" now, I need to make sure this "person" knows I don't support their behavior.  The only way I have to do that with this *waves hand over CFA building* "person" is not giving them their money and sharing that opinion.  B/c this person can donate a helluva lot of money to shutting me, and people who agree with me, up.

So, yes it's silly and overdone.  But unfortunately, things that are important do need to be in the forefront.  How do you think Stop Rush has been successful?  B/c people AREN'T letting it go.
  • I'm also so tired of it.

Everyone has an opinion on this or that. He was asked his opinion, and gave it. You don't have to agree with it. I don't agree with it, but I also don't eat at CFA because I don't eat chicken, so for me, it's kind of a moot point.

But I also don't agree with the far right politicians going to CFA's and taking pictures and attracting media attention that way. It's all a little ridiculous.

That's kind of how I feel--OTOH, I agree, that I would be so over the CFA thing, if my company weren't bringing some in to make a statement and if I weren't like "Ah, hell, it's just a sandwich."  But on the other, if I feel like I'm bored with the whole thing now and don't care, then it makes me a hypocrite.

Anyway, it's not as good of a confession as AF's, just something nagging at me.  I realize no one but me gives a flying fvck whether I eat the sandwich.  :)
  • Varooons, you know I agree with you.  If I wouldn't donate money to a cause myself and in fact think it's reprehensible, then I'm sure as hell not going to donate money through an intermediary.

To be fair, O-Face, the people who asked the question (some Baptist newspaper or web site) are surely not the ones upset about the answer.

I am facing a similar dilemma, Heffa. I have coupons for free stuff at CFA. Not "free with purchase," just free. On the one hand, if I go and actually only get the free stuff and don't buy anything, they lose money and I get a tasty sandwich. On the other hand, it just feels icky. Also, I don't particularly want to be seen there. So torn.

  • I just don't understand why this is a thing *all of a sudden*. The place has always been closed on Sundays. Dan Cathy has all those statements up all over the restaurants about how they're Christian and blah blah blah.

I just assumed years ago they weren't Yay for Gay. Didn't bother me then, doesn't bother me now - especially since every individual store is a franchise, and boycotting might hurt corporate a little, but it hurts my neighbor a LOT.

  • Bmom, before Dan Cathy could only donate his OWN money (sure he made it from the business, but you could justify it away).  Now he can donate the actual corporations monies with the CFA name attached to it.

^^I don't particularly agree with this, but it is a workaround.

Also, I believe you're seeing the snowballing effect.  The gay marriage issue, since it seems to be marching forward and becoming legal, is becoming a more violent issue and the rhetoric on the anti-side is heating up to try and melt that snowball.

I say bring it.  Do whatever you want in your church.  But don't try to deny an American citizen their Constitutionally given rights of citizenship.
  • For all of the ickiness they do some good as well - my sister worked for them in HS and college, and they gave her a scholarship for school. She also had some openly gay co-workers. Like bmom said - each store is a franchise, and they're not all bad.
  • Well, I want to get government out of marriage altogether, so I'm not exactly huge on the fight for gay marriage rights - I think it's the wrong issue to focus on.

I also assume that if I were to boycott everything that I didn't agree with, I'd own nothing and do nothing and wear nothing all day, every day.

Possibly I won't go to them as often as I have.

I did consider the franchisee, but then I decided it was their own fault for getting into bed with the devil.

I will agree with the amazement that this was surprising to people. I'll also say that, even though I've known their Christian tendencies for years, I didn't decide to quit eating there until this spring. So I guess I sortof understand how it is taking some people a while to come around.

I do think it's gotten more extreme in recent years, though. I mean, sure, it's always been closed on Sundays, but now it's like they specifically cater to the evangelical set, even playing christian music in the restaurant (Which I got around by going to the one in the mall). But yeah, it's too much, and I finally came around.

this goes back to when i wonder if every single person does their own research on every single thing they might spend money on. this is in the news, so it is the deal of the day IMO. if it didn;t hit the media, how many people would be on the bandwagon?

and i am not accusing people here of being on the bandwagon. but if i didnt hear about it in the news, i sure as hell wouldnt look into who owns Chik Fil A and what their personal politics are before i bought a damn chicken sandwich.

No, but being closed on Sundays is pretty obvious. Hobby Lobby is another culprit, though I admit I will sometimes get stuff there if I can't get it anywhere else or if it's dramatically cheaper. My crafting days are mostly over, though, so it doesn't really matter.

    This was interesting:

I did know about ServiceMaster, just because I was working on a project for them a couple of years ago and saw it. It gave me the icks, and I was glad we lost the project. Kindof like when I was bidding on the project for the "help us help jesus save you from internet porn" company.

I did not know about Tyson. And I thought in-n-out still put the bible verses on the cups but otherwise was out of the business of christian conservatism.

Plenty of local businesses will put a jesus fish on the front door or on their service vans. I've long done my best to avoid those, though we did use one to waterproof the basement in the old house, because the alternative was paying $10,000 more to someone else.

Hobby Lobby, may be scarier than Chick-Fil-A IMO.

I mean, they support groups tht are against adoption because of 'sins of the parents' BS.  Gothard is incredibly culty in a dominionst 'take over the world' sort of way.

(although WZZ is right, I don't research every company and it's pretty overwhelming.

My personal standard is "don't knowingly support businesses that support hate groups" (and I try to do enough research to know).
I'm not sure if Chick_fil_a is supporting what I'd consider one or not [they're not local to me, I haven't had to care, honestly] )
Hobby Lobby falls into that by my accounting but I do understand why it doesn't fall into it by other's accounting.

i don't particularly agree that being closed on sundays is obvious, but that may be a regional thing. or just a "i am ignorant" thing. NJ just recently allowed stores to open on sundays, i never bothered to wonder why (but I am not from NJ, so i never wondered why).
