Lauriac - re: federal jury duty

I got summoned a few years ago and if I remember correctly, you're basically "on call" for a week or two and have to call in each night to see if you have to report the next day.  I never had to report, so I can't give you any insight on what happens if you do.

Sadly, there's not much more to the story.  I called the number every night, and never had to go in, so I went to work instead.  BORING.   Especially since I kind of hated the job I had then.

I went through federal jury selection last month.

They started by telling everyone the approximate length of the trial and asked if anyone could participate for that length of time.  I think one person was excused there.

They then brought a group up to be interviewed for the panel (we all had numbers).  You're given a list of basic questions: name, address, were you or are you in the military, etc.  Everyone reads those off, then the judge started asking the questions submitted by the lawyers.  They're more specific.  Some were about attitudes towards police and lawyers and other were geared towards case background.  They were yes/no, but you could be asked to elaborate.

Then then the lawyers selected who they wanted.  The lists were passed back and forth between the prosecutors and defense, I think three times.

When I went, they also chose alternates.  That was a  rinse/repeat of earlier.

Hmm, where is this normally? Like are they going to ask me to hang out in New York City or DC or something for a week? Or is something that's more local than that?

The federal district courthouse should be fairly local.  Mine was in the next county, a little less than an hour by car.

When my BIL had to serve on a federal jury, he had to report to the courthouse in Philadelphia - about an hour and a half (no traffic) from his house in Lancaster, PA. He ended up staying in a hotel.

Well, either way, I'm sending my sh!t in. I don't want a warrant out for  my arrest while I'm trying to get married. Andplusalso, it's part of being an American and I'm all for America.
