Wedding Woes

Getting smooshed today

I have my first mammogram today.   It took a lot of convincing for my doctor to write the scrip, and I'm sure I'll be paying out of pocket for it.    My mom had pre-menopausal breast cancer, and I just turned 35, so I think it's worth any cost.

    Yes, I agree with you.

Here is hoping it doesn't hurt too much.

So ridiculous that insurance won't pay for something like that when there's a clear family history.  Kudos to you for doing the responsible thing.

    Vibes for healthy bewbs.

I'm thinking out of my azz here, but isn't there DNA testing for the genetic marker for early breast cancer?  If you can get that and you test positive, would insurance be more likely to pay for early detection then?

Also, I recently discovered that if my doctor orders a nice expensive test that his clinic can do (it's a big clinic that includes an MRI machine), if I make them order it there instead of at the hospital, it's still just my office co-pay, insurance picks up the rest.  I wish I'd know this before DH's $750 MRI bill, but hey, I know for next time, right?  Could you do something similar?

The insurance not covering it thing is probably more of a "haven't met my deductible" issue then an "insurance company is a bunch of jerkwads."   Or a blend of the two.

Regarding the genetic testing (which I'm guessing would cost more than the mammogram anyway) - - I am very leery about that kind of thing.   Maybe I'm paranoid, but I'm afraid an insurance company could find a way to use that info against you in the future.   Higher rates, pre-existing conditions and whatnot.

    Vibes!

Also, if you've got big ones, it doesn't hurt. Or so says my mother, the tiny-to-me D-cup.

Good luck!  There may be something to that theory about it not hurting as much with big ones.  My last one wasn't bad at all and the girls have gotten much bigger since the first one I had a few years ago.  Also, I went to the hospital's breast center, which is pretty much a mammogram factory, so I guess the technicians have gotten pretty good at minimizing the discomfort.
