Wedding Woes

s/o gluten allergies

My younger cousin has had this mystery disease for years. She gets severe, inexplicabe pain in various body parts--usually at times she's not getting enough attention. For example, at my grandmother's wake, she was 100% fine when we were just there with immediate family, but the moment the first guests arrived she put on a knee brace (that she just happened to have in her bag?) and started begging her mom for Advil.

Obviously, I'm not completely convinced it's real. I do think she has something, but that she plays it up when it's convenient. Anyway, I know one of the symptoms of Celiac Disease is chronic pain. So while my aunt was telling another "woe is me" story about how many doctors she's taken my cousin to I asked if she'd ever been tested. The answer? "Oh no, I don't think it's that."

Um, if your teenaged daughter had some undiagnosed illness for over 5 years, wouldn't you want to be tested for everything? Of course, she's also the pickiest eater in the world and the only foods she likes are pasta and bread, so a gluten free diet would suck for her. Which I'm sure is part of the reason she won't get tested.

  • it's fibromyalgia.

  • That was my first thought, hmo.  And then that gluten could very well also be the culprit.  But people are so easily jumping on that bandwagon lately.

  • One place I worked at, we had a patient whose husband had this weird pain disorder. He was fine, got into a small accident at work, but that accident triggered some sort of response in his body that any time he gets any small bump or scratch he goes into overdrive and is set into horrible pain. Anyways, took him years to get diagnosed because they thought he was a faker.

I first started having my IBS issues when I was a teenage (and I know that this isn't the same) but my mom dragged my butt to the doctor to get that sh!it figured out ASAP. I can't imagine just being so nonchalant about it.

  • Maybe mom likes the attention she gets via the daughter. Two AWs for the fake disease of one.

See, this pisses me off. My cousin and my uncle both have Celiac disease. It is serious stuff, which I'm sure you know. However, people treat it like it's the new fad diet or something, which leads to the people with Celiac to get shoved aside as liars and fakers. My friend and I went out for lunch once and she asked for their special gluten free pasta. The waitress asked her, and she insisted this was common practice, if she really had Celiac Disease. My friend said yes, and apparently the waitress just didn't like her face or something, because she gave her the side-eye and said "I don't believe you, but okay".

Lo and behold, we're having coffee and tea after our meal, and my friend breaks out in a huge rash. She wasn't used to gluten free pasta, and thought it just tasted the same as regular pasta, which is why she kept eating it. That waitress definitely got fired.

So, I agree, way too many people jumping on the bandwagon, which screws over everyone else.
  • They say it's not fibromyalgia. My aunt made it sound like she's been tested and it came back negative, but is there actually a test for fibromyalgia? She's also tested negative for Rheumatoid Arthritis, but that's what they tell most people it is.

Believe me, I have long felt that it's some crazy form of double munchausen's.
