Wedding Woes

Flag disposal is weird as hell.

I was just reading a post on the Nest about proper disposal of a torn American flag, and though I knew there were all kinds of rules for this for some reason, it struck me as funny that we treat a piece of cloth as though it's hazardous waste.

I can't possibly be the only one who thinks this is ridiculous, right?

the Mr. gets stabby about the 'reverence' issues.

Me, I insist on following them because they're pretty drilled into me--which is why I don't have a flag on display.
(and I ripped a friend of the Mr's to shreds for him insulting our not being 'true americans' (read-fox-news-ies) enough, as he used a flag as a frickin curtain)
  • Remember when Mayim Biyalik wore a flag as a turban on a Sassy cover in the early 90s, and some faithful reader wrote in that she did the same and got beat up at school for it?

that's one of the areas where it's stupid.
Because, really, it's a FLAG.  I mean, that's like shooting people for peeing on the koran.  (no, people shouldn't pee on the koran.  But people also shouldn't, ya know, murder people)

I don't like the flag being worn as clothing...but most of the 'gung ho, dont' burn our flags" people are in violation of the flag code anyhow--that old-navy shirt with the flag on it is very 'no no' according to most readings of the flag code.
  • I have friends who lose their MINDS over this topic and also the Pledge of Allegiance. While I certainly respect my country and blah blah blah etc., I don't have strong feelings about these things.

  • I don't mind it on clothing.  And I don't really care about the flag retirement, though I think it's a neat ceremony.

I do mind when businesses and offices fly ratty, tattered looking flags.  That seems more disrespectful than anything else, b/c then it's just being flown as "we think people will think we're reverant".
