Wedding DJ Cost

When I was searching for the right DJ for my Malibu beach wedding, I found that it was very difficult to compare wedding dj prices. My goal was to figure out how much each wedding DJ costs, then interview all of the wedding DJs in my price range. I was able to find one wedding DJ who services the Malibu and Los Angeles coastal area, and offered a wedding dj prices app on his website. After I was able to check the wedding DJs price and availability, I felt allot more comforable giving him a call. How did you figure out your wedding DJ cost? Most of my friends just said they asked their friends and family, but I wanted to do a bit more market research so I could make the best decision.

I looked online then looked on my local board for reviews ( we have a vendor review sticky) found my guy that way.

to me the quality, reputation and ability of the DJ to play or not play what we wanted/didn't want so that was just as important as the price. i interviewed a ton and chose one based on those criteria.

We found that prices can vary so much. You really need to compare what you are getting from DJ to DJ. One might be charging $900 but you are getting 5 1/2 hours of DJ service and another $1200 but only getting 4 hours (that's what we ran into). You can compare on prices alone. Also my recommendation is once you have the DJ's narrowed down to who you are interested in, ask if you can meet with them to hear their equipment. We went into one dj, sound was amazing. Went to another DJ who was twice the price & their equipment not nearly as good. One thing the DJ we went with said which we would never have thought of, many DJ's are going to Laptops which mean that the songs are compresed onto a memory drive. When that is done, you lose some of the quality of the recording. Plus if the laptop goes down (as computers can do) you have to either wait for them to fix it, travel to get another laptop, or your reception is over. If a DJ uses CD's you don't lose the song quality & usually they have two or more disc players so if one goes down you just end up with a few seconds w/dj talking while he gets next song up instead of continous music, better then no music for hours. When you go to the different DJ's have them play the same song for you at each one and you'll get a good idea of sound quality.  Hope this helps you out.

I first got recommendations.  Then sent three different DJs emails telling them what I needed and asking them for a quote.  We needed ceremony music/sound system, cocktail hour, and reception with MC.  It turned out only one of the three was available for our date, and his price was well within our budget (not to mention he was the most highly recommended), so we just went with him.

I used my local board on TK for recommendations.  The first guy I wanted was $3k in 2009!  I quickly learned that DJs here run the board from $500-$3K.  I managed to find someone in between.

SS - I have a friend that's a DJ so I asked him. The price for the in house DJ was a lot cheaper so I asked if there was any way he could lower the cost a bit and he ended up just matching that price (he was already going to give us a discount so it was really nice of him!).

If I hadn't known already who I wanted to DJ, I probably would have looked online and emailed anyone that didn't have their prices up. I also probably would have asked on my local board for suggestions. That's what I did with other vendors.
