A Shuttle For Reception?

Anyone ever thought about or done a shuttle bus or an SUV (as a taxi) for during and especially after the reception??  FI and I looked at a venue we really love possibly for the reception but it's 15 minutes out of town.  The venue is perfect, location not so much because there will plenty of alcohol flowing.  We were thinking about doing a complimentary shuttle/taxi service of some kind and hiring someone to do a certain timeframe to take guests where they need to go, etc.

Comments/Suggestions welcome, TIA!

  • We thought about it b/c our venue was about 15 minutes from town too, but in the end the cost and logistics just wouldn't have worked out.  I've been to a ton of weddings and always had to drive myself, so I knew it would be okay to let our guests deal with their own transportation.  Adults know how to have a good time but still be able to get themselves home.  I think transportation is great if you can fit it in your budget, but if not, don't sweat it.

  • A lot of people on my local board do this, and many of them feel it's "rude" not to do it. Personally, I've never attended a wedding where a shuttle was provided, and the Knot was the first time I'd ever heard of that. I think it's very generous, but I also think that people are adults and should know not to drink too much if they need to drive home afterward (or they should know to get a DD ride or call a cab).

The hotel we blocked offers a free shuttle to our reception hall, so we are using it. But if they didn't offer one then we wouldn't be going out of our way to provide one.

Your call. If you can afford it, ask your local board to recommend some places. Perhaps a limo company, an airport shuttle company or maybe even a school bus. If it's going to be a hassle, then I would personally scrap it. Put a tented card on the bar with the numbers for local taxi companies and trust your guests to do the right thing.

  • Our venue was a little bit in the middle of nowhere and about 15 minutes from our hotel.  We chose to do a shuttle because of this and it was a big hit! IMO was well worth the money.

  • Good points.  We already know of options for actual drivers/vehicles.  And I've actually never been to a wedding with one either but FMIL was concerned about it and my mom actually thinks it's a great idea (for once, I was agreed with, woot.)  FI and I actually really want to do it out of it being "nice" more than anything plus, we want our guests to be safe of course.

If we do it, definitely will make some cards of some sort to let guests know.  Thanks again ladies.  :)
  • Almost every wedding I have been to had a shuttle.  I guess it is just what we do in Jersey. I think it is great.  My FI and I drink every so often and weddings is one of them.  We are also firm believers that having one drink and getting behind the wheel is considering drinking and driving so we avoid it at all costs.  As a guest I have always been grateful for the shuttle.  Anyway, I suggest having a back up.  Phone number to a cab company or something because there was always someone who missed the shuttle and was too drunk to drive.  They paid for the cab of course not the bride and groom, they were the idiot who missed the shuttle.  But just something to think about.
  • Oh and congrats on losing the 3 pounds, I love the ticker!
  • have you already booked a hotel for guests? Try looking for a hotel that offers a shuttle...

  • Only if your budget allows, I think it's a great idea!

I'm definitely thinking about it because we are providing open bar, and I don't want people to worry about driving if they don't have to.  If I go with shuttles, I will provide one for maybe two hours that will go to our hotel of choice, and the nearest subway station, which is conveniently close to the hotel!
