Wedding Reception Forum

Making the reception super fun!!

I am compiling a list of fun activities/ideas for guests to do at the reception. My fiance and I are very goofy and love to laugh and have fun! We want our guests to have a great time at the reception so I would love to hear all of your ideas for making the reception memorable!

Also, our wedding is in October and will be Fall themed if that makes a difference!

Thanks!

Re: Making the reception super fun!!

  • Drinking and dancing.  That pretty much does it.  Hire a DJ that is well known for keeping the party going.  Having a wedding where people dance the entire night will make it memorable.  Hiring a crappy DJ where no one dances will also make it memorable, too -- just not in the way you want it to be.  You shouldn't need to have extra activities for your guests.  If anything, maybe a photobooth for your guest book.

  • i'll tell you what NOT to do : dont have any forced guest involvement games.

a great meal and great dancing are all that you need for a super fun reception.

  • Good Food
    Good Music
    Alcohol

Those are what make a wedding fun.

    games
    forced activities
    crappy dj

Those are what make a wedding not fun

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • Like pp said...good music and good food make for a wonderful party.  If you want to add a photobooth go for it but I wouldn't go farther than that.
  • I'm so glad that everyone responded pretty much the same way!
We want to have a fantastic reception... so this was very helpful to me. We've already found a great caterer, the DJ has really good reviews and the cake should be to DIE FOR... :)   Oh... and there'll be plenty of booze too, so I'm not concerned about that at all.
So now I feel better that our reception will be fun!

  • You could have a surprise at the end, we are getting a food truck to come and be parked outside of our reception to hand out a "midnight snack" as guests leave. This is our thank you to them for coming plus it is kind of different and unexpected.
  • Everyone wants to have a fun reception for their wedding day.  Like PP said, the way to acheive this is great food, booze, and music.  There really isn't a creative way to make it fun or any new ideas to make your day different from others.  All weddings (not all but most) have the same set-up, what makes them different and fun are the people involved.

  • I say.. HECK YA.. even if its one thing that you do different... Here are things I have thought of ... There could be things.. that you and your fiance love to do.. and u could incoorperate it in.... heres a little list..

    RENT:
    a popcorn machine
    a cotton candy machine
a candy table set up for guest instead of favors(you can do this pretty inexpensively)
Have the ice cream man show up for cocktail hour
have a belly dancer come in
have irish dancers come in... maybe something that is your family hertitage..
do a take on "where's waldo" - give them a list of things to take pictures of that your photographer could of missed.. there are a few lists/ideas out on the net on how to make these cards for weddings.. u supply disposable camera
Rent a Photobooth (cost is alot usually)
get an  "Ice Luge" for the bar.. for cold shots
    will it be outside???
If sooo... have corn hole game set up.. use your wedding colors.
u could set up a  croquet game...
Order out Pizza for guest before the leave..
shoot off fireworks at the end...

There are alot of things that will make it memorable... and yes the DJ does play a key roll .. he will elevate the excitement to any of your events..

    Have FUN!

  • Hire a DJ! Defintiely. And make sure it's an up-to-date playlist, and people can request songs. My friend's wedding in Atlanta last summer wouldn't have been complete without one. All of those corny typical wedding dances... oh yeah, we totally did ALL of them! Haha.

Their DJ was from Ace Disc Jockeys, I believe. She said they were reasonably priced. If you've got a bit of extra money to spend, I think it's worth it. :)
