Late Night Root Beer Floats?

Hi Ladies!

Today while watching 4 Weddings I decided I'd like to try to squeeze a late night treat into my tight catering budget.  I'm thinking root beer floats and with only 2 ingredients I feel it will be fairly cost effective - though haven't checked with my bar vendor yet.

My wedding is on a Sunday. I will have 4 appetizers for my cocktail hour 5pm-6pm, a buffet dinner at 6pm, followed by cake probably 8-8:30pm.  Our venue requires last call for alcohol 45 minutes prior to the end of the reception so I was thinking of serving root beer floats then (9:15pm) until the end at 10pm.

Is this something you would enjoy at a reception? Thought/opinions? Alternative food or beverage ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • I think root beer floats would be great as a snack before everyone leaves.

  • Good idea!  Lots of people do pizza's too, we're doing hot chocolate because our wedding is in the winter :)
  • I don't like root beer floats (I'm weird), but as a guest I'd definitely think that was a snazzy touch and probably ask the person preparing them if I could score some plain vanilla ice cream. Even if they said no, I'd still be impressed. That's a very cute idea.
  • I think late night snacks are always a great idea at weddings and would enjoy that as a guest.

My ONLY concern would be, do you think there would still be a lot of guests around at the end of the reception since it's on a Sunday evening? I would just hate for you to buy all the supplies and not have a lot of people left. Would you consider doing the floats an hour earlier?

You know your guests best too, and if you think everyone will stay until the end, then I think doing it later is fine. I'm just thinking that people might cut out earlier than usual on a Sunday night.

  • I think it's a great idea! And, as pp said, even if someone does like root beer, they could probably score some ice cream lol.

  • Fun stuff!  Late night snacks are always fun.  I like that this will take up the time the bar is closed.

  • I'm not a fan of root beer floats but the idea is really cool. I'm actually planning on having an espresso bar come out to accompany dessert and the liquor get cut off. Everyone has something nice and hot to drink and everyone gets sobered up before taking the drive home!
  • I went to a wedding that had root beer floats once.  I didn't have one myself but I thought that was awesome.

Me!   and a lot of lactose intolerant relatives.
JMO but I'd prefer some sort of snacky food, like pizza, burgers, tacos.
We served a local hometown favorite and it was a big hit indicative of the long line of folks

ETA   Is there caffeine in root beer?  Folks might decline due to that
  • I'm closing the bar an hour early and doing coffee/cordials. I LOVE the root beer float idea, though!
  • Thank you for the opinions, now I'm really excited to have them as our late night item! They may not be for everyone but I think most of our guests will enjoy them.  I don't see why a scoop of plain vanilla would be a problem - I hadn't thought of that but I will be sure to ask, good tip

  • I love this idea!! I'm planning on doing a coffee/hot tea/hot chocolate bar because it will be cold out. But I love root beer floats and this idea!

[QUOTE]In Response to Re:Late Night Root Beer Floats?: Nope, root beer is caffeine free. Op, so long as people can order just root beer or just a single scoop of ice cream if they prefer, I think it's a great idea.

Not all root beer is caffeine free, Bargs has caffeine in it. I personally love the idea of root beer floats.
