Serving Dinner in the middle of the table instead of Centerpieces???

Has anyone heard of, seen, or have pictures of this being done? I was told it works pretty well and want some advice. Basically instead of having centerpieces we would serve all the food for the 8 guest on a large tray  and it would give the ambiance of a family style sit down meal. I'm really looking for pictures to get ideas. Any help would be great!

I would google or use project wedding.  But really I would just think Thanksgiving dinner and go from there.

I think if the food was attractively arranged, maybe on tiered trays, or with something in the center of the tray, like a tall taper candle, it would look great.

If not all the food for that table, maybe something like a tray with a bottle of wine and some grapes/fruit/cheeses?

The pictures in pp are very pretty, but if you'll notice, they still have centerpieces of sorts, like the plants/greenery, flowers, candles, etc...  they are just of smaller proportions.
  • Sorry I don't have pictures but I've been to events (non weddings) that have done this and it worked fine.
  • I saw this at my friends wedding... they served the food 'family style'... it's the first time I saw it. The first thing I noticed was there were no centerpieces, but I think I may have been the only one. The wedding was still very elegant and everyone had a really good time.

  • I think "family style" eating is a wonderful idea. It encourages conversation. I would still incorporate smaller bouquets of flowers or some type of floral decor. If you notice in the picture you posted, there are flowers as well as plates of food. The flowers will help pull the look together. Small bud vases with one or two stems will be cost effective and still pull the look together.
