What colors should I use??

My fiancé and I agree that a "swing era" wedding is perfect for us. I'm ready to start running with the concept and planning away, but there's one problem. I can't pick colors!

I want the wedding to come off as elegant vintage with a sexy Hollywood glamor edge. For example I want a cage veil, definitely want to wear red lipstick and a fitted trumpet style wedding dress. He will also definitely be wearing wingtip shoes :-)

The problem is that I don't like frilly colors. No pink and please no pastel. I'm a little lost. I have an idea, but I don't know if this will come off as too harsh since I'm planning a March wedding. I know some people will expect the typical spring wedding and that sooooo not what I want. I was thinking a shade of champagne for a vintage/sephia sort of look with black lace accents and little hints of red here and there. Is the red too much? Will it look too dark? I am open to suggestions!

Re: What colors should I use??

  • You can choose whatever colors you love regardless of the time of year.  If you like shades of ivory and champagne with black and red, go for it.  It's not too dark.

  • Red and black are very elegant together, there is nothing wrong with that. Google search some pics for the color combo you are interested in to see how they look together to you.
  • I think that would be a great color combo for the type of wedding you are going for. :-)

  • I also like the black, ivory, and champagne colors for classic elegance.  With a pop of color, like a deep red.  Sounds perfect for a vintage Hollywood feel.

If you meant vintage sepia tones (black and white photos), then you might consider black, white, silver/gray with maybe a touch of antique lavender and midnight blue.  But if you mean the "zoot suit" type swing era, then it was all about the bright colors.

  • Go for what ever combination you like. I'm not a pink and frilly person either when it comes to decor. (although I sit here in pink pjs!) My colors are dark navy and white with silver accents and my paper stuff is black and white.

  • I like your colors!  I think it's perfect for your Hollywood edge. I am having white, black and red as my colors.  I was worried about it being dark, but it is coming together nicely!  Good luck!
  • Thanks ladies! I appreciate all the feedback. It's decided then. Champagne as a main color accented by black lace with small pops of red. I'm excited already!
