Cocktail Hour

I just came from my friend's wedding which was AMAZING. The one thing it brought up for me was that the cocktail hour was a tad bit awkward. During the reception typically you seat people where some will know one another or have something in common. This isn't true of a cocktail hour, which is typically self-seating. For me this was a wedding of a close co-worker and for over the first 1/2 I didn't see my other co-workers. I didn't really know anyone else and a few people remarked that it sort of went by slow. She had a ton of passed hors d'oeuvres, two cold displays, eight chafing dishes, and two chef-attended, plus open bar- definitely not the food. Also the reception hall played festive music. I was wondering if anyone was doing an ice breaker like leaving trivia cards on the table or having an activity of sorts their guests can be doing (like a keepsake for the bride & groom?) that would keep the guests occupied or serve as a conversation starter? Thanks ladies!
