Stocking limited bar for reception

We are serving beer, wine (white, red, and sparkling), and a signature cocktail at our reception.  We will have a cocktail hour followed by dinner and dancing for a total of a 5 hour reception.  Does anyone know about an online calculator (other than the one on evite) or know a rule of thumb for how much beer/wine to buy including the breakdown of how many bottles of each type to purchase? Also, do we need to serve more than one type of white and red wine?  We were thinking of just serving a Sauvignon Blanc and then one type of red.  I only drink Pinot Noirs, but I don't think that would be a crowd-pleaser.Thanks in advance!

IMO, if you wanted to only do one type of red/one type of white, you might consider Chardonnay and Merlot. They're sort of middle ground, and they might please more people. Or you could do 2 of each.

We are going through this right now, and as an event planner for years calculaton has much to do with how many guests you are having. I would plan at least one bottle of each wine per table. So if you have 12 tables, you need 12 white and 12 read just for dinner service. What in in your signiture cocktail? Will your venue be walking around glasses during the cocktail hour? These are all factors. As far as wine goes you can do two routes. A. pick a white and a red you and the fi love. Go with that. or pick a chard and a cab or merolot, they are middle of the road and pretty much everyone will drink them. Dont spend too much on beer, unless you have a beer heary croud. Pleople will always drink a cocktail or wine over beer if offered. Dont give too many options.
