Glen Oaks Country Club no sampling the food

I want to have my reception at Glen Oaks but they don't seem to want to let my groom and I try the food. Should we be concern?? They were voted by the knot as the one of the best in 2007. PLEASE HELP THIS NERVOUS BRIDE!!

Re: Glen Oaks Country Club no sampling the food

  • This is asked a lot so it must be fairly common that some places don't do tastings.  Being voted as one of the best is a good sign though.  Post on your local board and ask who has had their wedding there and find out what their experiences were.

  • I would just ask your local Knot board for reviews of the place, and Google your butt off to find other reviews - weddingwire.com, yelp.com, citysearch.com, etc. We didn't try the food before we booked, but I'm confident that we picked a good place because of all the glowing reviews I found online and that my local knotties posted. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but we visited a couple places that had a Knot "Best Of" sticker outside and we didn't care for them at all (we didn't try the food at those places though, so while the food may have been great we thought the place wasn't for us or the customer service sucked). Then again, the place we booked is also a Knot Best place and gets raves on my local board. Just some food for thought.

  • This is just me personally I don't care who voted it the best when it comes to things like this. One size does not fit all or even most with things like that. There was this cake person people kept raving and raving on and on about. Well, my FI and I went to her house because she does it out of her home. She had a dog and a cat and she didn't have any control over where they laid or jumped. They was even in the food area. We did taste the cake but it really wasn't all that. A few others were like that and we didn't care for that after people have raved and raved. My point is I would personally NEVER Go base on just hear say. I would have to had sample the food for myself. Its your wedding and reception true enough but do you want your wedding/reception to be remembered as wedding with the terrible food? Especially if it's you and/or your fiance who didn't like it.If the place wouldn't allow me to try the food then I wouldn't do it.If you REALLY truly wanted to have your reception there, and can't picture it being anywhere else could you maybe try to see if they would let you buy something from them to sample i? Maybe, it's a matter of giving something free and they don't want to give it out for free
  • I would dine at the restaurant and google reviews/complaints.  Also, if you're willing, maybe you could offer to pay a minimal fee for tasting.  Our tasting is $40 per person not including the bride and groom.
  • I'm sure you're spending A LOT of money to have your guests for dinner there. I would tell them you need to have a tasing (even if you have to pay more for it). A friend of mine didn't have a tasing, but the catering place let her eat at their restaurant. The food for their wedding wasn't even an option at the restaurant.Needless to say, it didn't work out well for her. The only plates that were empty were the cheese displays, salads and rolls. I know she paid $100 a head, so thought she was getting a good deal, but....So I am not trying to scare you, but you do have to ask yourself why they don't offer one..........
  • It just seems to absured to me that any establishment would not allow a tastings for events such as this.  ditto the comment above about maybe looking around a little more unless you're absolutly dead set on having the reception at this venue.  If you (or you family) is paying for a product, you need to know what you (or your fam) is getting.  Too bad there are no "Lemon Laws," when it coes to catering!
  • I dont know who you talked to but I am booked at Glen oaks and they said let them know what I want to taste and they will give you dates on availability as to when its served since there menu is big and expensive they cant just make 1 of everything for every bride but will let you come to taste things as they are scheduled. Call Randy thats my guy hes amazing. Ive been to addison oaks and glen oaks who are both run by oak management and there foods amazing. My friends wedding was at addison in 2006 and people still talk about the food. Im at glen oaks next october
  • I am getting married at Glen Oaks a month from today, one of the women there also told me that they don't do samples.  Which I was surprised because we are doing the four entree buffet, so I don't know how to choose.  However, I wouldn't be nervous about the food my step dad is a chef and as soon as he heard who the chef at Glen Oaks was he told me that I should book it. He said ever though the price is pretty expensive, the chef there is worth it and the food will be amazing.  Did you look at the list of food on the buffet....20 different types of salads!!  :)  hth
