IPod Reception???

For a long time, I was seriously thinking of having a DJ for our IPod reception. He would be there to announce us and instruct ppl when to eat and advise that they sign the coffee table guest book. I feel that the guests will be lost if there isnt a DJ guiding them. My MOH is a music major at the local college and says she can get one of her friends to do it for $200 (a really good price but FI thinks its an unnecessary expense since we are on a tight budget).I am starting to think we dont need one. I was thinking of having one of my brothers introduce us and set the songs for us (first dance and father daughter) and go from there. And kind of be our own DJ's. It will be a very casual reception and the music will be there for those who want to dance (its is mostly slow romantic songs on our playlist). Anway, to get to my question...for those of you who did or are doing an IPod reception without a DJ, how did/will it turn out?Do you think my ideas are cheesy or wont work out?

Re: IPod Reception???

  • I went to an iPod reception that did not have a DJ.  It worked out really well.  A friend of the groom used a remote to control the iPod (I guess using bluetooth or something?  I don't have an iPod so I don't know how it was done wirelessly) and the sound system that was provided by the reception space came with a mic.  So whenever they wanted to make an announcement it was easy to turn the music down and do what needed to be done.
  • We are doing an iPod reception. I don't think our venue comes with a sound system so we are getting a portable PA system w/ipod docking station to use instead. The PA system runs about $200, so I guess it doesn't really matter in your case.
  • Our DJ is only $300, so IMO $200 is a lot for someone to just announce you. I think that being your own DJ's is a good idea, it kind of ensures that you'll get exactly what you want :)
  • We're doing an ipod reception as well. The best man has some speakers we can borrow, and we'll just set up a couple of playlists. The MOH is putting together the playlists for us,and she'll most likely make any announcements we want. Hopefully it'll work out fine.

We plan on doing an IPod reception too.  I do not know who will do the announcements, but I am sure someone will set up the challenge.

We're having a friend make the annoucments at our ipod reception.  He's just going to announce that we're there and announce when we cut the cake.  Otherwise he'll hit play or pause (during the toasts) and that's it.  Doesn't take more than a few minutes to hit pause, announce the cake cutting, then hit play again so it's not really ruining his fun that night either.  Plus he owes us a favor.  ;-)
