Wishing Well

Okay---I may just be dumb when it comes to this wedding stuff. . . But what is the reason for a wishing well? I have some people telling me its to sit by the gift table for anyone with cards, but then I had a co-worker tell me that she set it up at her wedding for people to put cash in, and once the guests were informed they started put money in there just as if they were giving for the dollar dance.

Re: Wishing Well

  • I've only ever heard of it being used for cards, I personally wouldn't tell people at the wedding to put money in it, I would assume all those people have already bought you a gift and/or paid a large amount of money to attend your wedding (hotels, outfit, babysitters, bridal shower, Bachelor party etc etc) and to ask for money is a little bit tacky. (unless it is your cultural tradition to pin money on the bride and groom - in which case I don't think it's tacky to follow your own traditions). If you can get one that locks it is a good way to ensure your cards stay safe at the reception.
  • Please don't even consider this.  Your wedding should not be a fundraiser, and to put up a "wishing well" with the idea that people should stuff cash into it is just, IMO, dreadful. It is not dreadful to make a card box so that people who do bring cards to the wedding can put them in one place.  As you thought, it sits on the gift table for use by your guests.A card box can actually be almost anything.  Some people do use a container shaped like a well.  Some use things like bird cages, my DD used a decorative box that she bought very inexpensively at Michael's.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • Well I personally wanted the wishing well for cards. In fact, my handy craft grandpa made me one for the wedding but made it out of all weather wood so that way after the wedding we can repaint it to put in our back yard. Its gorgeous. I only thought it was for cards, but when my co-worker told me that I was in shock and then started questioning it. I think its tacky to say "hey put some CASH in here", and definitely didnt want people to think thats why we had it. I thought maybe I was the only person thinking it was for cards. The only few weddings I've been at just had a gift/card table, so I've never actually seen one used. Thanks for clearing it up for me ladies! Ya'll are great!
