In place of the late night snack

We're doing a bonfire! I'm so excited about this idea, it's perhaps one of the few things that has come up about planning the wedding that I have been truly excited about. The venue has already said they can do it (it's a resort, on a lake, so not out of place). I was thinking marshmallows, hot dogs, and *maybe* s'mores but I think that might be pushing it too far on the messy side ;) Most of the guests will be staying at the resort, so will have the option of returning to their room to change if they feel the need to. I've had people express concern about my wedding dress, but really, it's the very end of the night on the ONLY day I'll EVER wear it. So what if it smells a bit like camp fire? Or gets a bit of marshmallow on it? It's the memories created that matter, right? What would you think if you were a guest at a wedding that did this?

Re: In place of the late night snack

  • Fair warning: I am one of those people who like "off the wall" thingsThat being said! I think that is the cutest idea ever and I would be totally excited to go!
  • I think it is a GREAT idea!  I would love to be at that party.  you could leave it a surprise, spread the idea thru word-of-mouth, or on the reception card, add to the standard "cocktails at six, dinner at seven, bonfire at midnight" so guests can be prepared.
  • Sounds like a blast to me. It'll definitely be memorable for your guests. Just make sure to have lots of wet napkins on hand. However I am not a fan of gaps at all and most of your guests won't mind participating in the clothes they are already wearing unless they are very snobbish and only care about appearances rather than having fun and enjoying the moment. So I don't see changing clothes for the bonfire to be a good idea or even make sense.
  • I would be one who would defintiely change my closthes.  I do not want my really  nice clothes smelling like smoke and I wouldn't really want to do a bonfire in heels! That said, I think it is a really fun idea and I would love it.
  • I think it sounds like lots of fun, but like kmm:  I'd definitely be changing out of my dress clothes to sit by a campfire.  As long as I had time to run back to my room and throw on a pair of jeans and a hoodie, I'd be there.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • honestly once you do marshmellows you have to do smores hot dogs are much more skipable
  • I think it's a fun idea. I wish we could do it ourselves! I agree with ffmaid, have the s'mores stuff on hand ... if people think it's too messy then they don't have to make them.

  • Such a fun idea! I'm sure people will change their clothes. We had an after-party in the resort lounge following our reception and almost all the guests changed into more comfy clothes (including my DH!).
  • Yay!  We are having campfires too!  There will be a small campfire going during the cocktail hour (just to keep things warm) and then a slightly bigger fire when it gets dark.We have opted to not have the smores and fire cooking though.  I was afraid of kids causing accidents and people getting too messy.  That being said, when I mention to my guests that there will be a fire, their first reaction is almost always..."Can we have smores!?!?"  We are doing a snack/candy bar though so they will have other chocolate and stuff to munch on....just not over the fire.
  • I think this is a great idea. Just include this information on your invitations and people will come dressed appropriatly.
  • Oh my gosh, I LOVE this idea!!!  And I totally think that bonfires and smores and/or marshmallows go hand in hand with bonfires!!!  If I was a guest, I probably would skip the hot dogs and eat a toasty marshmallow!  I think 20 years down the road when you pull out your wedding dress and it still smells slightly of campfire, you'll instantly remember your wedding day and the amazing campfire!

  • I would love it - I wish our friends were more like that...but since we doing something similar at ours, I'm hoping it'll change their attitudes towards 'normal' weddings. After our wedding reception, FI and I are going to a local Symphony dressed up in our wedding attire along with a few friends. After that, we are heading back to our house with our families to have a bonfire. It's gonna be awesome. I can't wait.and btw - you can't have a bonfire without s'mores. it's like, mandatory ;-)
