Engraved Glasses

Is anyone doing engraved glasses as party favors? Since it looks like I'm going to have to rent most or all of my glassware, I want to do engraved wine glasses, water goblets or champagene flutes (not sure which) and give them away as a party favor. At the moment, I'm leaning more towards the champagne flutes. Has anyone found a site that has reasonable prices for 140 glasses? I know shot glasses are probably cheaper, but I thought it would be a cute idea to choose something everyone could use that night.

Re: Engraved Glasses

  • I do not want to brust your bubble, but people really do not want engraved glasses from your wedding.  Save your money on an edible favor instead.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Don't worry, it doesn't burst my bubble. I posted because I want honest options. I'm curious why you think that it's not a good idea. I'm not really interested in edible treats. Personally, I want to give them something that they can atleast use again. My initial thoughts were that people won't really care much for personalized engraving , but at the end of the day, it's still a wine glass that can be used again. I was also thinking that maybe people typically buy wine glasses in mathing sets, but since most of our guest are couples, then they'd end up with a set anyway...lol
  • If I received anything engraved with your wedding date, names, etc; I would just leave it behind or toss it. It's a nice thought, but most guests don't want items with your info on them.
  • My FI works at a glass engraving place so we are getting engraved glasses....BUT they are only going one for us, one for each of our mothers, one for his stepmom, and one for my grandmother. I'm going to ask my girls closer to time if any of them would actually want one (though I don't see why they would) and if they do, they can have one.I don't see why anyone else would want something like that because it's not special to them. If the mothers and grandmothers didn't already have keepsake cabinets, I couldn't see them wanting them. Although cups are nice, engraving them with your names and date is really only going to be important to you, not someone else.
  • ok, thanks for the feedback ladies. I guess I gotta come up with another idea. It's just that I really am not feeling most of the traditional stuff. Quite often I see the candles, photo coasters, etc get left behind. Personally, I've left them behind too. Probably the most liked item I've seen are music cd's. I know it's hard to find something that everyone will like, but I was trying to think of something a little more useful and unique that would still keep me within my budget. Also, I agree that many people will not want to have something with our info on it, so I hadn't settled on the engraving ideas. Note sure if I was going to put our names/date etc or just a simple generic design that goes along with the color scheme. Oh well.....back to the drawing board.
  • Your intentions are good, but stop worrying about choosing something useful.  The only non-edible favor I've ever received that wasn't a waste of money was a Yankee candle. Save yourself a lot of stress and go edible.  Seed packets, seedlings, coasters, engraved anything, etc will get left behind or tossed.
  • Alright, alright, alright. Points well taken. Thank you all for saving me from the added stress and from wasting my money.
  • This why I'm not a fan of favors.  Nothing you pick will be universally liked by everyone.  I would say candles or edible favors are least likely to get left behind or tossed, but even those I have accidentally left behind before at two different weddings.  If I received an engraved wine glass, it would go in our wine glass rack and while I might not use it for company, I'd use it if I just grabbed a wine glass to have a glass of wine at home one evening.

  • Ok imagine you are at a party and at the end of the night they say hey you can take home this dirty champange glass that matches nothing else you own. What do you think??? If you are just thinking of buying teh glasses and keeping them yourselves then ikea has a bunch of cheap basic glasses but skip it as a favor idea
  • ok ok, I said I get the point...lol... It's one thing to say the glass will not have value to anyone because it's engraved with my info, but I'm not so sure I would be offended if I were told I could take home my glass. Yes it's "dirty" but if I was the one drinking out of it why would I be bothered by that? I could see if it was a cheap plastic cup. People aren't offended when you tell them they can take home a center piece that includes a dirty vase and flowers that are gonna die in a few hours.
  • IMO the glasses aren't necessarily a bad idea.  An option to consider is to a more generic engraving on it, a pretty graphic with just the year on it.  But that being said, FI and I recently attended a wedding at which that was the favor, and yes, we kept the wine glasses, and yes we use them, though maybe not for entertaining, but I use them after work for myself.  I would even be willing to use them for entertaining if all that had been printed on them were the heart graphic and the year rather than their names and wedding date.

  • Thanks for the input StarJay. When I first thought about the idea, I was planning to do something very generic as far as the engraving. I don't know why everyone feels the glasses can ONLY be used for entertaining so it's worthless without giving them a set. Surely there are other people like me that don't entertain much and drink a glass of wine by myself every now and again. Anyway, I'm still considering other options and I appreciate the feedback.
  • A lot of people already own wine glasses so they are more inclined to use the ones they bought themselves and don't want to entertain with a glass that has "Amy & Mike 2009" engraved on it. However, I like the idea of a glass with a very generic engraving like a heart or a star. I probably wouldn't reach for it first because I like my own glasses, but I'd use it as an extra if I was entertaining. My favorite favor and one that I use often is a wine stopper. It's one of those nice heavy chrome metal ones and has a star at the top. I use it all the time.
