Can't afford chair covers... alternatives?

Hey fellow brides... can't afford chair covers.  Any other ideas to use in place of chair covers.  A friend suggested pillow cases... blaaa.  Help with idea suggestions.  Has anyone made them?  Do you have a pattern and how did it compare to purchase material etc rather than a chair cover purchase?  Lowest prices I have seen are around 2.80 something or so. Our venue has plastic office looking chairs we need to cover.  Help!!!! Wedding next September 2010.  Chocolate brown, green, ivory/ gold colors.  Thanks for any suggestions.

  • I'm sure no-one is going to notice the chairs, and even if they do it won't affect their enjoyment of your wedding.  That said, I've done some searching and have these ideas for you...Simplicity do a chair cover pattern, but I think you need a lot of fabric and about an hour per cover.  To be honest with you for the amount of time, effort and materials you will need I would say it is cheaper to hire or buy them.these websites have them at $2 for cover and sash (rental) http://www.urquidlinen.com/index.htmlhttp://www.weddingchaircovers.com/prices.htmlCheck out ebay, they have loads on there (I typed in Chair covers 100), you could always sell them afterwards but beware if you DIY you will need to enlist the help of someone outside the Wedding party to put all the covers on for you on the morning/afternoon of the wedding.Good Luck
  • honestly just skip teh chair covers nobody will notice or care except you and any makeshift idea will cost a lot and look worseOr rent pretty chairs
  • Ditto the chair covers.  IMO, this is one of those things that wedding magazines, tv shows, and websites makes you think is incredibly more important than it really is.Your guests won't care about the chairs.  I have to be honest, I just went back to look at photos of my own son's and my DD's weddings to see whether the chairs had covers on them.  That's how little impact they had~and it was my own children's weddings!Remember that as soon as your reception starts, those chairs are filled with people and so no one is going to notice the chairs.FWIW:  I don't really like chair covers:  they slip and slide and bunch up.Save your $$ and put it into something like food or drink.  For that matter, as a guest I'd rather you put it toward something on your honeymoon than covering my chair.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • Rent different chairs, it can be less expensive than chair covers.

  • A friend of mine bought chair sashes and used those, without the chair covers.  It looked really nice.
  • You know I was just thinking about that.  The top of the chair has the hard colored plastic.  I was thinking about attaching a sash on it to see how it covered.  Also thought of making mini covers for just the top of the plastic chair.  (They only have a small oval at the top, then are open in the back with the plastic seat of course.  It's hard to describe.  The main structure and legs are made out of silver. ) I just hate the little plastic on the back.  They are assorted colors as well.  Oh well we will see.  I have a good friend who can sew.  We will see.  Thanks for your advise.

  • I agree with the pp.  Look into renting different chairs.  It is usually alot cheaper than renting chair covers or purchasing sashes.
  • Have you contacted a woman named Czarina? We used her for our wedding last year & she was great, & much less expensive than what the hotel was going to charge us. I'm pretty sure her contact is "The Chair Couture" or something like that. The owner's name is Czarina & I can't say enough good things about her! That being said, don't worry too much about the chairs, especially if it isn't in your budget. Seriously, the chairs look more bare when you see them in an empty room but once your guests are sitting in them & the lights are dim, no one is really going to notice. Also, sometimes people trip over the sashes & chair covers so it could actually be a hazard. Good luck!
  • Some rental companies can actually make it cheaper to rent chair covers.  Try http://www.hendersonweddingrentals.com.  They have chair covers for $1.65 a piece and sashes for $0.55 a piece to rent.
