Lemon and floral centerpieces...help!

Hey everyone, I am going to be arranging my glass vase centerpieces with sliced lemons and flowers. I know that the acid from the lemon will probably kill the flowers within a day or two and I will be making the centerpieces the day before the wedding so I don't want to risk it. Isn't there some type of plastic thing I can buy to put the flowers in with water and then surround that plastic piece with the lemon slices so they never actually touch? I am planning on using around 5-10 flowers per centerpiece.I have no idea what this thing is called or where to purchase. Please help!

  • I'm doing the same centerpiece at my wedding.  We just used a glass or plastic cup skinny enough to fit in the larger vase and just make the sure the water doesn't come up farther than the glass.  We are actually putting our lemons and flowers in lemonade pitchers...looks too cute!  We've attempted many trials and the lemons lasted for almost a week even when the water mixed.
  • can you leave the fruit whole, and not cut it up? Then you could place the fruit in the vases in advance, and add the flowers the day before, or the day of. I use whole limes in vases, usually with calla lilies, and they do fine. After 2-3 days, the water starts looking murky. If you change the water out every couple of days, it helps last longer. After 4-5 days the fruit starts getting mushy. The flowers don't seem to wilt any faster.
  • The vases I purchases are not big enough to fit the lemons whole, and plus I love the look of them cut up, so I dont really have a choice. i did come up witht he idea of putting a skinny cylinder vase into the large vases so that the lemons and the flowers wont touch, i think if i add the flowers to it the morning of, it should be fine. I might do a trial once it gets closer to my date.
  • Telefora makes a vase that sounds like what you are describing! I was at the florist the other day and she cracked one and then sent it home with me to play with for centerpiece ideas. It is made so that the fruit or whatever you are using as the decor is enclosed completely in the outside of the case from the bottom up, and then there is a circular vase opening in the top where you can insert your flowers and water so they stay separate from each other. If you go to the telefora website you can find the vase featured in some of the designs in the "flowers in a gift" collection. I know that the florist I visited retailed the vases for $15 each. Good luck!
