Candy Questions

Those of you that did a candy buffet, how much candy did you buy? I have heard 1/2 lb for each person, is this about right? And in the end how much did the candy end up costing you? What websites did you use and was it worth it? It is looking like it is going to be expensive and FI and I are trying to decide if it will be worth it. TIA

Re: Candy Questions

  • It's not cheap.  I am looking at several hundred dollars for 150 people.  Some of the websites I am using (I have found some candy to be cheaper at different websites, etc.):bulkfoods.comcandydirect.comcandyfavorites.comcandywarehouse.comIf you can buy candy locally to save shipping, you might try that.  Some of the candy I want I can get at Target for cheaper.  I also got Hershey minatures at Sam's and wrapped them in personalized stickers.
  • I used bulkfoods.com. I was impressed with their selection, prices, and shipping ($5 for my WHOLE order (70lbs) and it came within one day!). I estimated 5-8oz per person, around 130 on the guest list and I got 66lbs and I am getting a little bit more). The size bag you get will also determine how quickly you run out. I actually have two bag sizes, smaller and larger. I'm going to let people decide and even if they all get larger bags I should have enough. • I think the whole order was $260 with shipping. Glassware we got for cheap ($0.50 - $8)-- some at flea markets some at Home Goods/Old Time Pottery. My mom also made 3 topiary's - with gumdrops, orange slices, etc. Email me for pictures of those too... I think they are the best part!!
  • We are doing one for our wedding in October.  Our colors are green and black, so we're trying to stick with candy in those colors.  If you don't care what color, or you want a color associated with a holiday coming up where you can get the candy anywhere, it will be cheaper. So far we've spent about $500 on the candy.  We ordered from acandystore.com, candydirect.com & candywarehouse.com.  It was important to find a place with free shipping over a certain $ amount or a flat rate.  The 3rd didn't have either but we wanted the lollipops that they had.  We also went to Sam's to get hershey kisses, tootsie rolls & peppermint patties-since their prices are really good there. We borrowed some containers, but also spent a lot on those.  We are expecting around 250 guests, so I'd say we are around $3 per person now.  But I'd much rather have the buffet than a little gift most people won't care about. I'd go more for a full nice looking spread than go by pounds per person.

  • Also, we found out to think about how 5 pounds of one type of candy may be a whole lot more/less then the same amount of another type of candy.  Take into account size, wrapped or not, shapes.  Its been work but I'm glad we are doing it!

  • I agree with PP--I am going to do a little less than 8 oz per person because not everyone will go to the candy buffet and I don't want tons left over.  So I'll be getting around 50 lbs.  I also agree that the candy buffet should be pleasing to the eye as well as the palette.
  • Oh and I got all my glassware at TJ Maxx and probably spent $70 on 11 containers.
  • Post on your local board and check out trash to tresure board. I got my candy glassware (all 16 pcs) from a local bride for 70 bucks! they are all sqaured and look really neat.
