  • 10:00am = breakfast (although really I'd rather be sleeping than going to a wedding that early)11:00am = brunch12:00p = full lunch1p = full lunch2p - 4p = cake and punch5p - 8p = dinner8p - later = cocktail/appetizer
  • Personally I've been to  weddings starting as early as 10:30 am and as late as 7pm.  I've always been served an full meal   We just adjust our meals for that day around knowing we would be getting a meal.  So sadly (??) regardless of what time you had your wedding, if you were in my social group I would expect a full meal   (fwiw - I've been to 35+ weddings, so it's not like my expectation is based on 1 or 2 weddings).

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Like the PP, I would expect a full meal at any one of those times, based on weddings and other affairs I've attended. I don't think I've ever attended a "formal" event that didn't have a full meal, even if the meal fell at 2 or 3pm for example. The only exception I can think of is at 8pm, heavy hors d'oeuvres (enough to make a meal out of) would also be ok.
  • Breakfast: 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.Brunch: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.Hors d'oeuvres: 1-3 p.m.Soup/salad/sandwich: 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.Full lunch: 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.Dinner: 12 - 8 p.m.*Cake and punch: 11-1 p.m./4 p.m.Dessert only: 8 p.m. onward* Like a PP said, full dinners are the "norm" in my area (and daytime receptions really aren't that common). So unless an invitation said otherwise, I'd honestly go to a reception expecting to be served dinner. I wouldn't mind if it weren't a full dinner, but I'd appreciate a heads-up beforehand.
