Wedding "parade" suggestions?

Hi! We are walking from the church to the reception (it's only two blocks).  I thought we would play music and make it sort of like a parade through this sleepy town.  Does anyone have suggestions about what my guest could carry to get them into the spirit of things?  I only came up with long peacock feathers...

Re: Wedding "parade" suggestions?

  • Unless all of your guests are Shriners who ride around in the little cars, you can't ask them to parade themselves through town.  Just let them walk....empty-handed.

  • Corn cobs or swords.
  • Interesting. I got nothing.
  • Google new orleans wedding parades. That will give you some ideas.

  • Hahaha! How about those goofy glasses with the big nose and mustache so they can disguise themselves? That's what I'd like to wear if I were in that parade.

  • In Italy where my son got married it is tradition to walk through the little streets and the shop owners, shoppers, etc come out and clap and yell congratulations and how beautiful the bride is:) It was really sweet- we didn't heve music or props or anything though, just the well wishes of the observers
  • Thanks for all the suggestions.  I think the best thing might just be to let them have fun on their own terms...most of my family will just dance to the music!  As for those people who felt the need to be just plain mean, maybe you should find something better to do with your time.  Saying unkind things to others unecessarily uses up your energy....put it towards something positive next time.  Thanks again to those who posted positive replies : )

  • Bells?  Bubbles?  Noisemakers?  Sparklers??  I think this sounds amazing and fun!  Good luck with your planning :-)

  • I saw this done in New Orleans. There was a small little band playing when the saints go marching in, and everyone was dancing.  The bride carried a white little umbrella.  It was a really cool idea.  When we saw this, I turned to my FI and was like can we move the wedding to NOLA. He said no...haha.

  • In NOLA, it's tradition- they even have a name for it, I'm blanking at the moment on what it is, I just saw it the other day on WeddingByColor. You could always try it!  Hire the brass band and everything.  I'd be down for it.

  • Like a Mummer's Parade? Or the Second Line? I'd do little umbrellas if your guests are familiar with either of those rituals, otherwise I'd skip the props and just let people walk.

  • I have a friend who did this. They provided bubble wands. No one used them. People just walked.
  • I would be hesitant to use noisemakers in certain areas... just because not everyone would appreciate the noise. Depending on the route this parade will be marching down, please, for the sake of the possible sleeping babies and such, make sure that noisemakers won't end the police coming down to deal with a noise disturbance.Although, I think the idea of the kazoos is funny, lol. If you have kids marching, they would love this sort of thing.. and you can get fairly cheap tambourines and maracas at some places, too.

  • I live in New Orleans and we do second lines, basically the band is the "first" line and all of the party goers are the "second " line.  The bride and groom carry a umbrella and the guest wave hankies in the air.  It comes from the tradition of the everyone following the band partying.  They Tradionally used the umbrellas and the hankies for the heat.  this is a great tradition and if you are interested i can send you something that you can put in your program to describe it so everyone will understand. I have a lot of out of towners so they won't understand so i included it in our program.  Email me at hwood1@lsuhsc.edu if you want more info.  HTH
