Wedding Reception Forum

I know this sounds a little odd...

(it's obviously for an article and I'm leaving it open so that I can just grab your quotes, so please post nice). Are you (did you?) taking extra measures at your reception so that everyone is comfortable with the volume of the music? Perhaps you’re specifically sitting your 95 yr-old grandmother away from the speakers or the band. One bride even told us that she provided ear plugs to some specific guests because her reception was at a location where the sound really traveled (maybe a bit excessive, but it was a considerate thought…). If you have thought about this or are planning anything like this, please post below. As always, it’s appreciated.

Re: I know this sounds a little odd...

  • Yes, I plan on sitting my older relatives farther away from the dancefloor where the DJ will be. I figure my friends are the ones who are most likely to get up and dance anyway, so i'm going to sit them around the dance floor!
  • yes.  I had the older people away from  the speakers. It's one of many reasons why we did assigned seating.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Oh I also told the DJ I didn't want the music so loud people on the other side of the room had to scream to talk to each other.

  • Ditto pps on seating certain guests away from the loudest part of the dance area. I also made it clear to my DJ prior to the reception that we wanted the music at a comfortable level. During the evening a few songs got loud most likely to the type of music but he quickly made adjustments and all was well.

  • In addition to seating my guests further away, and watching the levels, I'm also talking to the DJ about what TYPE of music he plays. Many of the songs today with the lyrics they have... (AHHH) Just not appropriate for a wedding reception. Checklist of events throughout the reception (Couple announcement, Cake Cutting, Champaigne toast, to Garter Toss and Exit) and careful planning on seating and music selections. There will also be indoor and outdoor areas. I'm so excited!!! Just 6 months to go!!! Good luck with your article.
  • beats- Consider sitting your friends most likely to dance away from dance floor and elderly relatives right next to it. That way when friends get up to dance they will be on dance floor and older relatives are not going to be off in a corner some where not involved but instead still up where the people are.
  • Thank you so much. These answers were really helpful. KA
