DIY Orchard?

I have been searching for an orchard in Northern California to have my wedding reception in but have had no luck. I found a very cute victorian vacation rental that will let us have our wedding there so I was thinking about making my own orcahrd with $20 fruit trees from the nursery. They will be planted in wooden planters/crates and placed inbetween tables with lanterns hanging on the branches. They will have about five or six months to grow once I buy them so they wont be too full. Does anyone have any input or ideas on this?

  • A $20 fruit tree in a planter will probably be about 4 or 5 feet tall, I think it'll look like a potted plant and possibly won't even hold up a lantern. If you can't find an actual orchard, it might be best to choose a different kind of venue. Vineyards make excellent wedding reception backdrops, there have to be plenty of those around. Or even just regular farms.
  • I've already seen the fruit trees, they are about 6 1/2 feet tall and will hold a lantern. The lanterns are only about 7 inches tall. (for candles) Plus the planter will give it some more height and people will be sitting down. They are for sale around March and April and start budding the end of April and May. They bud pretty fast and our wedding is in September. I had a couple fruit trees and I know they will be green in September.
  • I think it sounds soooo beautiful and creative!! I think it's nicer than a real orchard, because the trees will be smaller and less obtrusive!
