Funny Idea

My fiance and I are considering RickRolling everyone at the beginning of the first dance. We have no idea if we will, but we think it would be hilarious. What do you think?

Re: Funny Idea

  • I know it isn't TECHNICALLY a RickRoll without the video, but I still think it would be funny.
  • Wouldn't it be a little more current to have someone pull a Kanye-at-the-VMAs?As with all sorts of jokes at weddings, know your audience...

1st year anniversary in Victoria with a killer whale topiary!
  • I think it really depends on  your crowd.  No one I know would even know what RickRolling is.  The only reason I know what it is is because someone mentioned it on the boards and I Googled it.  I think what would be more fun for everyone watching is if you started off with a typical slow dance and then all of the sudden it switched to a fast upbeat dance and you danced your hearts out.  That would be funny, but also sweet and fun to watch.

  • Rick roll was dumb on videos and is so 6 months ago. Nobody over 35 will get it and those under 35 will think you are being silly and passee. In a few years you will be humiliated at such a silly fad and purposefully being so dumb. Half or more of your guests will not get it the other half will consider it idiotic
  • I would reconsider that idea...so you're planning to start your first dance and then switch to Rick Astley "Never Gonna GIve You Up?" I guarentee you that alot of your guests are going to be totally confused (I had to Google that, too, to figure out what it was) and just think it's weird you switched to a passe 80's song. Consider watching your wedding video in 5 years and whether it will still be hilarious then. ;-)

  • Eh. IMO, I think a lot of older people wouldn't get it, and a lot of younger people might think it's played out (because all these "funny first dance" videos are constantly on YouTube). I don't think it's an awful idea, but I wouldn't personally do it.

  • I think after Cartoon Network rickrolled the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the rickroll was officially retired.  You just can't top that one.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • IF your crowd knows what it is, and IF they won't think it's overdone and tired, then do it. I would have been in the I don't get what they're doing or why they're doing it crowd. I didn't know what Rick Rolling was until it was mentioned here a couple of months age. Like Dani, I googled it to see what that meant. I personally find it lame, but it's your reception.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • I don't think it's a bad idea, especially if you don't want the lovey-dovey sentimental first song. I agree with the idea of starting off w/a slow song and interrupting w/a fast one. However, you will have to coreograph this. Do you have time/ablility/funds to put this together? It will also have to be coordinated w/your DJ/band. I think it's cute when couples do this, but it takes alot of work. I guess if you have a venue that is doing everything for you and you have time on your hands it would be a fun idea, but I'm really putting everything together for myself at my venue, and I don't have time to put together a coreographed dance. You know your crowd and if you think they will enjoy watching this as much as you will enjoy doing it, go for it.
  • "I think after Cartoon Network rickrolled the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the rickroll was officially retired. You just can't top that one."Wow, I actually was thinking the same thing when I first read this.My honest opinion is that you know your guests better than any of us here. So while here it may not be so well received, your guests my still think this is funny (Although, I do agree w/ the PP that said pulling a Keane West at the VMAs thing might be funnier), in which case, go for it.

  • And now I'm wondering how many people here actually knew what RickRolling was back when it was relevent.I, too, had to Google after seeing it on The Knot a while back.

  • I just think it's been done to death, personally.

  • I had no idea what it was until I just googled it... not very funny in my opinion... sorry. :/ break out into some crazy dance like Cotton Eye Joe or the Chicken Dance and then go back into your song... it would be interesting and that would make me giggle. GL
  • I had to google it and didn't find it at all funny.. There are a ton of good ideas and ways to be funny or silly with your first dance but I just don't think thats one.

  • I get what everyone is saying. It was just an idea we had but haven't even begun planning anything related. (Also, I have been home sick for two weeks and was trying to start a conversation. :-P ) If we did (which we probably won't because the sentiment of the moment would stop us), it would be more for us, just because we would find it funny.
