Dull reception site - need ideas and pix!

Hello all,We are getting married at a beautiful lodge in MN with a gorgeous ceremony site, but a very dull and after thought of a reception room. It is an odd shape and really just looks like a large office conference room. Does anyone have any ideas or pix of how to spice up the ceilings and the walls?  They usually do tule w/xmas lights to the center of the room, but I want something more exciting. I have no idea how to accomplish uplighting, but I am game for any ideas. TIA!!!!FYI - it's a winter wedding on 12/26 and my colors are classic black and white.

  • Try posting on your local board and ask if anyone on the board has had a reception there.  Someone might have pictures to share with you.  Really though, any banquet room is dull.  Once you get your tables in there, dressed with the linens you plan to use, and decorated with centerpieces and plates and napkins, it really changes the look of the whole room.  Ask your DJ about lighting options.

  • Remember that you're looking at an empty room right now. Once you get your tables, with linens in your colors, CPs, a wedding cake, your WP in lovely outfits, you in your beautiful dress, the men in suits or tuxes, and your guests all dressed up, the room looks 100% different. Add in a DJ, gift table, food & bar, and it's a filled up room! Don't worry too much about spending a lot on decorations. With black and white, I might add one other brighter color to add some "pop" factor to CPs or linens, and you're really quite set. As soon as you start trying to cover ceilings/walls, you add a LOT of money for little gain. You need a lot to cover them, or else it LOOKS like you're trying to cover them. Did that make sense? GL
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • I agree w/ pps. It's a blank canvas right now. The possibilities of what you could do are so endless it's hard to give suggestions. Try googling for some images of classic black and white weddings, and you will probably start to get inspired.

  • my venue was the same way it was a ballroom at a hotel but still had that banquet look. I got married and had reception in same room so I set up room as a reception. I needed the room to look softer for a wedding so I draped the walls nothing fancy just something simple and it was really affodable. Had gorgeous centerpieces and linens and dimmed the room for a softer look and it totally transformed the room. I have pics I can email you if you want. my email is viciv703 at aol.com
  • You could try ignoring the walls and instead opt for a focal point to draw attention away from the ceiling and walls. ideas:Centre table with wedding cake, escort cards, desert buffet or guest book decorated with flowers (or equivalent)If you are having a band, see if you can hire a star curtain and a stage, they should be able to supply lighting. This will draw people's eyes away from the rest of the room.
