Shel Silverstein

Okay - So, please help me and tell me if I am nuts. I really love this idea, my FI is not so sure about it, but I like the idea because it kind of means something to us.When FI and I first started dating, I would wake up in the morning and start reciting "I cannot go to school today, said Little Peggy Ann McKay....." and go on. And for my birthday, he bought me "Where the Sidewalk Ends". I thought it was cute and loved it. I never had my own copy of the book, my sister and I used to rent them from the library ALL the time.Anyways - I started thinking about "The Giving Tree" and wondered if I could figure out a way to use that, as we are going with a Tree Theme for the wedding. I couldn't figure out what I wanted, but then thought - What if I went through all of the books found as many poems as I will have tables, and put one in a double picture frame (folding) with one side with the poem - and the other with a picture of us. I picked poems that are either about love, wedding, and other stuff that we share - turtles (we have one), boats, fishing, etc. So I basically could pick a picture of us that would "go with" the poem.Am I nuts? Any ideas to better or change it a bit?

Re: Shel Silverstein

  • I love Shel Silverstein! I would think you could stick with his poems and not jsut the mushy ones! Throw in some humor too. I think that's an awesome idea.

  • I completely love Shel Silverstein too! My advice would be to refine your theme so that it is understandable to your guests. Here are three ideas to show what I mean: 1. Keep it the The Giving Tree in particular. You could use the iconography on your stationary, small trees as centerpieces or something, hang the escort cards off of branches of a tree, etc. You're super creative- you'll figure it out. 2. Make it Silverstein themed. You can still emphasize The Giving Tree, but you could work in the pictures and poems from the other books. His drawing style is rather identifiable and a lot of people grew up reading his books. 3. Poetry Themed. That could be fun. Decoupage words on vases for centerpieces, a romantic word bank magnet set as a favor, etc. If the poems on the tables aren't by Silverstein, the guests might see it as more of a poetry theme and less of a Silverstein theme. Good job on such a creative theme! And if your FI is like mine, if he doesn't hate the idea, then he usually likes in the end when sees the result all put together.
  • I love the idea of a poem and a picture on each table as well as hanging the escort cards from a tree.  Great ideas, have fun with them.
  • I think this sounds cute!  What about also using a copy of The Giving Tree as your guestbook and have people sign inside?

  • Oh my god you HAVE TO DO THIS and HAVE to post pictures! i love this so so so much!!! :) MAKE sure you put the story about how you used to read it and stuff :) I love the ideas everyone has posted, this is adorable!!! I like the escort ideas better others have posted, but a friend of mine and her now husband met at a library and so her escort cards were in those menelia (sp..) envelopes that are sometimes in library books. They were on a big poster and they would just take their card out and find their seat. It was really cute!! Again, i know you already have other escort ideas, but just thought I'd share that :)
  • I just stumbled on this post and I must say I LOVE IT!  First off, The Giving Tree (and Where the Wild Things Are - it's a tie) is my favorite children's book, so I"m right there with you.  We were going to have a little tree design - maybe to hold the placecards and title it "The Giving Tree" with quotes or whatever.  We're not ending up doing it now, but that was an idea. Also, we're using "Your Personal Penguin" (thus my sn) by Sandra Boynton as our reading for our ceremony.  It has significance to us from way back when we started dating.  I love the idea!  Good luck!
