Reception ONLY???

Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me here I'm very early on in the wedding planning process.  How common is it just to have a reception only?  My FI and I are planning to get married at the courthouse and then doing a reception the following day,  any suggestions on how to make it feel more like a reception instead of a party? would be greatly appreciated.  Our reception will be an outdoor and tented in October 2010.

  • any suggestions on how to make it feel more like a reception instead of a party?Yeah.  Do it on the day of your wedding ceremony after your guests witness your ceremony. What's the point of having it the day after?

  • Can you explain why you won't have your wedding on the same day as the reception?
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • We were going to get married the Friday before at the Courthouse, and have a reception the next day.
  • have a friday night reception...nothing is wrong with that.

  • The best way to make it feel more like a reception than a party is to have all of your guests witness your ceremony right before this. You're saying that you're going to the courthouse the Friday before the reception. Why don't you either have a Friday night reception, or just hire an officiant for Saturday?I don't want to come off as sounding snarky or like I'm hating on your idea ... I'm really just failing to see why you can't have the ceremony beforehand.

  • Agree with PPs. Have it all on one day...
  • That's what I was getting at? Why separate the two events. Have your ceremony on Saturday or have your reception on Friday. A reception is when your RECEIVE your guests who attended your wedding. So, IMO, having it the day after makes it a party, rather than a reception. Is there a compelling reason that you don't want them on the same day?

  • "We were going to get married the Friday before at the Courthouse, and have a reception the next day. " yes-you said that in your original post. We're asking WHY not for a repeat of the same info.WHY the day before? WHY the day after? What's the reason?

  • We are having some serious issues with family members who are not supportive of our relationship after being together for almost 5 years.  we thought it would be best to have a small courthouse wedding, where it could really just be the two of us and we would not have to worry about someone trying to ruin the day, and maybe trying to spare some feelings.  I never really thought of doing a reception on the same day, but now that is an idea.
  • So are you saying that you'd be having a private ceremony, but then inviting the objecting person/people to the reception the next day? If that's the case ... I honestly don't get it. If they'd make a stink at the ceremony, then wouldn't they also make a stink at the reception? But if they're NOT invited to the reception, then why would the two events need to be on different days in that case? Am I misunderstanding? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I mean, in the end you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm just saying that, as a wedding guest, I'd ideally like to witness the actual wedding before I attend the reception. I'd be happy to celebrate with you either way, but I think it puts a bit of a damper on the day if I'm celebrating a marriage that I wasn't fortunate enough to witness.

  • Most people don't do that because they were brought up with the idea that it is rude, which it is. You cannot invite people to the reception who are not invited to the ceremony.
  • It's ultimately what you're comfortable with and I don't think guests will be offended.  I personally do not like the attention and stress of being in front of everyone with a ceremony - and I also want the marriage vows to be more personal without feeling worried about everyone watching. I'm planning the same thing as you - Friday courthouse, Saturday reception.  Also, there are many people who go on destination weddings and come back for a reception.  No big deal.
