reception table cloths idea. good or weird??

My reception is going to be at a historic farm house in MN. It will be outdoors under a rented tent and the dance floor is in the barn. It has a very relaxed and simple feel to it. The colors are yellow and grey. Instead of renting or buying yellow table cloths I thought that I could have all the ladies in both families rummage through their personal table cloths to come up with a buch of different shades and styles of yellow table cloths. Would this look alright or would it just look like chaos? Let me know any thoughts or improvements on the idea. Thanks!

Big chaos potential.  Aside from all the different shades of yellow and different fabrics you will you will get, think about sizes.  Too small, too big, etc.  Also think about condition of the cloths, if there are stains, etc.  I think you're better off renting.
  • you can always give it a shot asap....see how it works out for you lol...but if you get too many sizes etc, then ditch it and rent.   (i hope it works out for ya..i'm mad about renting tableclothes ugh)

  • I think it has massive chaos potential.  It could be cute, but you'd have to get VERY lucky with sizing and colors.

Also, renting is sometimes more expensive than buying.  Linentablecloth or smartyhadaparty is sometimes cheaper. (or within a dollar or the rental price, and if you buy them, you can resell them on craigslist or recycledbride.)
  • Or if you want the mismatched look, try and find used (but still nice) tablecloths online or in resale shops.

It could still look vintagey, but they'd all be the same size, you could check for stains/tears, and you wouldn't be asking to borrow from family/friends.

  • I would worry about what to do if someone's tablecloth got lost or damaged.  People may not want to risk that with their stuff.  The general idea I think you're describing, as being comfy and homey and casual, I think would be really cute. I just don't think you should depend on other people to let you use their stuff.

If you wanted to put the time and energy into it, you could start looking at garage and estate sales, flea markets, on Craigslist, etc, to buy mismatched tablecloths in your colors to use. Wash them or have them cleaned and pressed before the day, then you can sell them and get some of your money back afterwards.
  • Yeah they will def get dirty and stained for the people who are loaning them to you. I would look in thrift stores
  • I would worry about them getting ruined. And the size issue. What size do you need? And how many?

But I totally get the whole renting sucks thing; I entertain a lot so don't usually mind buying stuff.

I really think you could round 'em up at garage sales, thrift stores, flea markets, etc. especially if you have a few people keep an eye out for them for you.
