Menus?

We are having a buffet at our reception- is it necessary to have a printed menu at each guest seat? Seems a little silly to me, but don't want to assume that its not necessary.

Re: Menus?

  • I've never seen one at a buffet. I'd say skip it.
  • Sounds like unnecessary extra work.

  • Nope. Not necessary. But I do like to see labels at buffets so that it's easy to tell if something is vegetarian, gluten-free, or contains nuts, etc. As a vegetarian, I find it really disappointing to take a scoop of salad, only to discover bacon bits in it upon further inspection.

I'd do this. We are doing a buffet at our wedding too and we will be putting labels at each food item.  My dad is a caterer, and typically he doesn't do the labels himself, but has had people make them up and he uses them at their request. I can not tell you how many times I was asked "What's this?" when I was working an event with him. Just make some sort of sign and give them to your caterer or someone at your venuem to put out on the tables for you.

  • We have a stationed meal, but decided to do menus.  The food will also be labeled, so it was completely unnecessary to do menus, but we decided to make pretty ones to add to the table decor.

Not necessary, but not pointless either. I've attended one buffet style wedding (in the traditional sense where tables were released one at a time to try to keep lines to a minimum). It had menus on the table and I can only assume it may have helped people move through the lines more quickly because they could think in advance of which things they'd want to try. I know I did some "pre-picking" based on the menu alone.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a "menu" at every place setting but you could have something in the middle of the table, a sign or paper in a frame just stating what food is served at the buffet as an FYI.

I agree, menus are not necessary though.
