Reception food HELP

My reception will be starting around 8pm, and I don't know what to server for food.  People will already have eaten dinner, and we will be serving cake, so that rules out dessert, and dinner.  Do we server hors d oeuvers or what would be a good thing to serve?
Any ideas?

Re: Reception food HELP

  • Maybe mini quiches, crab cakes, pieces of baked chicken or mini lamb chops?
A veggie try or maybe a chocolate fountain with items to dip in it )rice krispie treats, fruit, etc.), spring rolls...

  • Welll when is your ceremony?  If it's at  6 or 7 they actually might not have had dinner yet.

I can tell you people in my circle eat dinner at after 8 on a regular basis.  Actually I just finished dinner and it  20 minutes after 8 my time.   7:30-8pm is the most popular dinner reservation at the resturants around here also.

I can't speak for everyone, but in my circle a meal is expected regardless of time.  So if we know the reception is at 8, we would have a later lunch to hold us over.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • You could serve dinner at that hour.  It really depends on the time of your ceremony, like Lynda said above.

Our reception started at 7:30pm and we served heavy hors d'oeuvres, about 15 pieces per person.  Plus we had an open bar and cheesecakes.  It worked out great for us, but we served enough food to constitute a meal so it really was like dinner.

  • My reception also starts at 8. My ceremony is at 6 and my cocktail hour at 7.  We are serving a full sit down dinner.  I think that most people are going to expect to be served dinner, I would.  If you are not going to serve dinner I would note that on your invitation "reception starts at 8, light hors d' served"  otherwise some may come to your wedding hungry, thinking they are getting dinner.  You don't have to do a formal dinner you could do heavy hors d' as others have said and maybe a couple of stations.  Buffet style might be nice too, so people can eat as much as they want.  But I would plan to feed them.  Just a thought.
  • You COULD serve a dinner, but at that hour my vote is for heavy hors d'oeuvers!
