FIRST DANCE Song

When we originally started planning my wedding, we had decided a LONG time ago that we didnt want a first dance, it just wasnt us.  After a couple of months, people have convinced us that we would regret not having one, so we said why not?!

Now, my Fiance & I cannot agree on a song.  I have come up with a huge list on ones that I am willing to dance to.  I have had him listen to the whole list, and I got the same response the same to every single one, "It's ok.  Not terrible, but its ok."  The song that he wants wasnt on the list and is a TERRIBLE song in my opinion and its just not me. Not to mention, the song is a tad bit overdone, and we are BOTHare about being as different and unique as we can.   I do not think it is wedding worthy, its a nice song, but I do not want it as our song.  A couple of people have told me to let him have the song, becaue he doesnt get much else in the planning process, but I cant bring myself to do that.  I dont want to be too selfish or have him be secretly pissed off about it....

SHOULD I LET HIM HAVE IT, of is it Ok for me to say no.

Dont Want to miss a thing-Aerosmith (His Choice)
Your Everything-Keith Urban (Mine)

Couple others we have been looking at, but these are about all we can decide is decent, do-able songs.  We've gone through MILLIONS of list of songs:
Could Not ask for More-Sara Evans
I Do (Cherish You)-Mark Wills
My Best Friend-Tim Mcgraw

Re: FIRST DANCE Song

  • Just curious - what's the song?

And what are some of your song choices? I think a compromise would be best. Find a song you both think is OK - neither of you should think your first dance song is terrible. Maybe keep looking? There has to be a song out there that you both like!

  • I need to know what song he wants before I can decided whether or not you should just let this go.

  • I actually like the Aerosmith song, but I'll be the first one to admit that it's super cheesy. Does he like your song at all or does he think it's terrible? If he doesn't like your pick at all, choose one of the three you listed as acceptable. Acceptable is better than terrible. :)

  • He doesnt hate them, he's ok with them, he's doesnt feel stongly about any of them....
  • Pick what you want then if he doesn't feel strongly about it. You obviously feel strongly about his song choice, so I would just go with what you want. I don't think he'll care that much. Maybe give him more say in a different aspect of the wedding?

  • i would just keep trying to find a song you both like :) You can always do less traditional songs especially if you both like really unique stuff.  My fiance and I have a song that is super special to us but it would be really intense for a wedding (Your Guardian Angel- Red Jumpsuit Apparatus) so we found it in a string quartet vion and its beautiful and now we wre using it for my walk down the aisle :) So keep looking and try finding something DIFFERENT! You might like it!

  • I agree with Natbug. I would continue looking for something that you both like. If you can't come to an agreement, and he doesn't feel strongly about it, then I would go with the song you like I guess. It's not ideal to leave him out, but if you feel strongly against the Aerosmith song, I wouldn't play that one.

  • We were perplexed about the first song but I was driving to work and heard Savage Garden's I knew I Loved You and knew it was perfect.  I showed FI the lyrics and he agreed.  I never would have thought of this song but I heard the lyrics and it brought tears to my eyes.  I am normally not emotional at all.

So for you, I'd suggest looking at lyric websites to find the one that fits both of you.  Neither of you should be unhappy for such an important thing.  It would be like one of you not liking the food.  Maybe that was alittle extreme of a comparision Laughing

  • I also love the Edwin McCain version of I Could Not Ask for More

  • So first off, I just have to say FINALLY someone who hates that Aerosmith song as much as I do!!! It's such an awful song and I hate it enough that it is one of the only songs on our do-not-play list for the wedding. Don't give in on that one!! :)

We're undecided for our song still and have also considered scrapping the first dance idea, but one I do really like is Babylon by David Gray.

    Good luck!
