Tacky Tacos?

We'd like to have a taco bar, nicely catered. Mom thinks it's tacky. Suggestions/Opinions?

Re: Tacky Tacos?

  • Mmm, tacos.  As long as you're hosting a sufficient amount for the time of day and it corresponds with the overall formality of the event, food is never tacky.  At a white tie state dinner, maybe not so much on tacos.  But for anything short of that, I'm pretty sure you're okay.

This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • mmmm tacos :)

I agree.. As log as your wedding isn't black tie, I think that you will be fine :)

    Man, I'm hungry now..

  • i love tacos but would think that probably, if it's the only entree you're planning, taht you need another one too. i'd be happy to see a taco bar at a wedding (or perhaps at the cocktail hour) if they were good tacos.

  • I went to a very formal wedding that did this.  It was catered by a popular taco place in LA.  Delicious!  Also, look on Martha Stewart Weddings.  there is a wedding that did tacos and jarritos and it was fantastic!  You can go very gourmet with this!

  • Sounds delicious, and a fun idea.
  • I don't think it's tacky.  And I love tacos.  :)

  • Yummy tacos!  A bit messy though, that would be my only concern.
  • I've been to formal weddings that have had gourmet taco bars. Depending on the fillings you use it could actually be very upscale, I say go for it.
  • I LOVE tacos but I wouldn't eat them at a wedding because they are messy, and can mess with my stomach- doesn't sound like an appealing combination.
I also agree that it depends on your venue and overall feel of your wedding.

  • You know what is really tacky? Bad wedding food. You know what is always delicious? Tacos!

If you can find a way to minimize the mess - go for it! Maybe offer little tostada bowls for taco salad? You could offer bibs - I've seen it done at a wedding that did BBQ.

  • I'm thinking of this also. We're not having a 5 star fancy pants wedding. It will be nice, but not uptight. The way I see it, people are rarely pleased with wedding food as it is. Everybody loves tacos. So why waste money an expensive meal.  Smile

  • It may be messy for some people, but I grew up on Mexican food, so I would totally do it. I agree with PP though, it has to match the formality of the wedding and you should have other options.

As for the messy aspect: I went to a friends' wedding recently where they served lasagna. She just tucked a plastic tablecloth in the top of her dress, covered the skirt,  and ate. HAHA It's her personality, though, and everyone just laughed about it.
