Reception Table Decor

This is the only part of the wedding I am having a hard time with. The dinner tables are going to be the long rectangular tables and in 4 rows (about 4 put together per row) I bought 50 of these really cute little black lanterns that a tealight sits in. I dont know what else to put on the tables!!! I NEED HELP!!! I would love flowers but I dont want to spend all that money and have them just thrown away. My color is Red and Black but the lanterns are black therefor need to bring the color red out more. My theme is simple but elegant. I thought about getting pots, painting them red and planting some pretty flowers for the guest to take home in them. But to me thats more country and laid back theme, not simple and elegant. Any ideas?

  • If you don't want to spend the money on flowers only because you don't want to throw them away, why don't you buy silks?  You can always sell them to another bride after your wedding, enjoy the look of having flowers at your wedding, and even put a little cash back into your pocket afterwards. :)

  • -use red pillar candles in the lanterns if they fit
-buy silk red petals and scatter them down the middle of the table, between the lanterns
-use red table runners (i wouldn't do this and the petals though)

  • Depending on how crafty you are, or how much time you want to spend on it, you could make red tissue paper balls of different sizes and shades of red to place between the lanterns.  Think also about the theme or feel you are wanting for your reception and go with the flow of the design.  Also try thinking outside of the box...is there something that the two of you associate with your relationship or journey that could translate into decorations?  What about red picture frames with photos of you and your groom, family and friends and special places to the two of you that could be illuminated by the candles in the lanterns?  I hope these ideas help!  Good luck and congratulations!!

  • Red table runners with white linens and the black lanterns would be a great simple centerpiece that would be both pretty and low enough to allow conversation across the tables.   It sounds lovely.
  • I like the idea of a runner, and the red candles. You can also use white candles in the lanterns and then use plain tealight holders with red tealight candles in it.  Here are some pics I found.

I like the the runner on this and the cute red ribbons on the tealight holders

  • I am using the same size tables. My colors are white, black and pink. I have white table cloths and I bought black stain table runners. I am using small glass candles and i bought really large glasses that I am putting floating candles in. I am then going to place some clear crystals around. On some of the other tables I am using small square glass bowls with floating bright pink and white gerber daisys. Im on a tight budget. Good Luck and Im sure what ever you do it will be beautiful.
  • I made something once that may work for you, (click on my blog address at the bottom of the page) We used red and white carnations (usually pretty cheap and they are very hearty flowers so they stand up to warmer temps better than most flowers. We picked them up in bulk from costco and used wet foam spheres from www.save-on-crafts.com. I picked up aluminum platters from the dollar store (they looked like silver platters) to keep the water from leaking onto the table, but you could not see them under the carnation spheres.

I also made a mock up centerpiece for the same wedding that the MOB hated but the bride loved, so we went with something else. I used glass cylinder vases filled the bottom with glass marbles filled with water and used as a fish bowl with a red beta fish, put it on a glass mirror, and surrounded it with tea lights that i wrapped wiith red ribbon. It was very sleek, and super inexpensive. Good luck, and Congrats!
