live band vs. DJ

which would you prefer when you go to the wedding?
lets say the live band can only play oldies (which imo makes it even more awesome).

Re: live band vs. DJ

  • You didn't have my choice listed, which is either.

My #1 concern with a band is taking too many breaks.  Make sure the band you have has a way of playing some music during breaks (like that new Gaga hit) to keep the party going.

  • As long as they wear those awesome lobster glasses, no preference.

Seriously, though, I think that the bandleader or DJ's ability to read the crowd and shift gears can make or break the entertainment (plus there's more risk with a band because they could be really sucky, whereas I think there's only so much a DJ can mess up, although I'm sure I could be proven wrong).  I personally wouldn't go with a band that couldn't play more modern stuff, because I want variety at my wedding, but I have had an amazing time at a party where the band was only playing oldies.
  • If you go with a band, be sure that they can play different styles of music like a DJ would.

I'd say either. Though personally, I don't love music as much as most people, so I sometimes prefer a DJ because they play songs I know-- and they sound the way I know them. I get sad when bands play my favorite songs and make them sound different, because I have little to no music appreciation. I think I'm in the minority there, though.

But I agree that it's really about the crowd-- if the DJ or band can get the crowd going and having a good time, you're set either way.

PS: I love Brittany in the lobster glasses!

  • I'm not a big fan of live bands at weddinss either. I'll go with the DJ anytime...
