Wedding Favors for a Black Tie Event?

Ok, I am by no means trying to sound rude here or put down anyone's wedding favor ideas or favor websites. I'm just having a lot of trouble finding favors that fit the venue and style of our event. I've thought of giving out bottles of wine or boxes of Godiva chocolates to each guest, but I'd like something really original and feel like those have been done so many times before. I keep googling things like "black tie favors" or "luxury wedding favors" but end up with the same sites offering the same types of things. There is nothing wrong with the rustic DIY favors on Martha Stewart and I find most of those ideas absolutely adorable!! It's just that it doesn't really go with our wedding style. :-/ Our budget is $40.00/per person for the favors so I'd like to keep it around that amount and not go much higher, but I'm stuck on what to do. Has anyone else had this issue before? If you are having a black tie wedding what are you deciding on for your favors? Thanks!

I would go with something edible.  Have a super fancy chocolate.  Have you had Vosges chocolate (link)?  Really delicious, and interesting flavors.  You could give everyone a mini chocolate bar, or a little box of truffles...I would love those as a favor.  We went to a wedding last month that was fairly formal, and they had some kind of locally made chocolates that were in little bags with ribbon, which we appreciated (yum) and thought was appropriate for the formality.  

I get that you want it to be lux, but I would be careful spending too much on the favors.  Some guests won't take them--and that number increases if they're random trinkets.  You don't want to feel like you wasted all that money if you see a bunch of favors left on the tables at the end of the night.

Wine and chocolate are two of my favorite things!  I know you said it has been done before but you can  make it different with speciality packaging, wrapping or wine made just for your wedding.  And if you do chocolate you do not need to get Godiva you can get a local store or speciality truffles (sooo delicious).

Do you have a local specialty chocolatier, craft baker, or vineyard?  I find using local products is a great way to make things personal, and your guests are probably more likely to take a favor that is something they can't get anywhere else.

We did mini-champagne bottles (as well as a candy buffet) and they went over really well.  I just did cheap champagne and made my own labels for them, but with your budget, you could get something better like Veuve or Chandon.  I loved my champagne favors.    But wine or Godiva would be equally good.  My dream was to do boxed truffles, but I couldn't afford it.

Oh and I love the PP's suggestion of doing something local if you can.

There's nothing wrong with tried and true favors, they've been done a lot for a good reason :-)

I think wine or champagne and chocolate sounds like a great favor, but no matter how good it is, there will still be people who either choose not to take it, or forget to, so keep in mind that you'll likely end up with extras no matter what, so it should be something you like as well since you'll be taking some home with you.

I'm also another vote for trying to find something local, it's a great way to add a little bit of individuality and specialness to something that's popular.

</div><div>Oh God, those are so delicious. I'm definitely going to hop on the locallly made or artisan bandwagon. It's a better twist on the tried and true favors. I mean, Godiva is nice, but Vosges, or a local chocolatier or winery is, in my opinion, much less mass market and more unique.

I'm assuming since you are having a black tie event, your venue has probably seen a great deal of luxury events. I'd ask them what they have seen that is a bit out of the ordinary. If it's only been done once or twice, it's not "ordinary".

Since you have a fairly generous budget for each favor, you might want to look into local gift baskets that a gourmet store puts together within that price range........it could be a nice cheese, a nice split or small bottle of wine, and maybe some crackers and chocolates. The baskets should be on the smallish size so the guests aren't lugging around huge baskets, but if it's small, then the items inside can be small as well, but really good quality. Even if you don't want to do baskets, ask the manager at a local gourmet store for some ideas. I'm sure they've been asked before.

I second Vosges chocolate, they have some cool stuff!  Or you can try a local chocolatier, OOT guests would probably really like that.

Also, I saw a pic of a wedding the other day where they had splites of freixenet at the table for each guest as the favor, I thought it was cool looking... but then it's not very black tie to have each guest struggle to open their own champagne split... so IDK how I feel about that one.

Sue's idea to ask the venue is a great idea!  Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

The last black tie wedding I went to, they had really simple rock candy (that matched the brdiesmaid dresses) and attached a tag to it stating they had made a donation to a local charity.  IMO, there's nothing more beautiful than sharing your wedding happiness and love with those most in need. 

Sorry, I might get some heat for that comment, but I had to say it!  On the flip side, I am also a fan of quality chocolate and if you do have leftovers you can just eat them (unlike a trinket).

forget godiva. not fresh by the time you get them.
for our reception we went to my local chocolatier and had a box of 5 chocolates made for each guest. the chocolates are better than godiva can ever do and since i'm a huge supporter of locally owned indy shops it was perfect. it cost us but it was worth it. you have no idea how many emails i got asking for the chocolate shop's info from guests.
