Candy buffet

Yay or Nay?
I like candy just as much as the next person (actually probably more), but I'm debating whether to have one at our wedding. I find it's become a new wedding trend, like cupcakes, and now everyone is doing it. The last couple people I've known who have planned weddings in the last few years have added this feature. Is it too overdone? Should I just have one anyway?

Re: Candy buffet

  • Personally, I think it is a waste of money...and what in the world would you do with leftovers?

I agree with you somewhat. There's actually a couple ladies that have started a business out of this. But they charge over $100 to put it on. If I were to do this, I'd just go to the Bulk Barn, and the dollar store for dishes and put it on myself at maybe half the cost at most. But still debating.

We had a candy buffet at our wedding.  We gave guests take out boxes for them to fill. These served as our favors.

  • As a guest, if it were well done,  I would love it b/c I love candy. We considered doing one, but it seemed expensive and we didn't want to deal with figuring out all the details of one, like how much, which kinds, picking out a variety of containers, etc. From a visual standpoint, I think they only look good if they are really elaborate. If it is too small, I don't care for how they look.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

Agree with this. I am on the fence about doing one. If we do I'd want to go all out which is harder to plan and more expensive, but would be so cool. And any leftovers would go home with us and be gone in about 2 days :)

  • We did one, and it was very well received.   I didn't want to spend the money on color matching the candy though. So, I went to Costco and just bought a bunch of bulk candies. M&Ms, Red Vines, Sour Candies, Almond Toffee brittle, Hershey's kisses (that I put our initials on the bottom of with labels from Michaels). I also made a dumdum topiary that served as the centerpiece for the table, as well as a few other kinds of candies that I saw and liked.  It probably cost me less than $100 total, and I bought the candy jars from another bride off of craigslist for dirt cheap.

I also did a cookie buffet, so I put the candies and cookies on the same table with take-out boxes.  So, people could fill the boxes with cookies or candies.  I did have some leftovers, but not nearly as much as I thought I would.   We just gave the rest away to friends and family that visited in the following weeks.
  • We did one for ours and they were our favors.  They do tend to be more expensive than you anticipate though.  We too picked candy we liked, rather than just wedding colors, and for 100 ppl, I think we spent probably about $200 on the candy & making our favor bags, and I bought all my jars from another bride for $100 and resold them for the same cost.  The cost wasn't a huge deal for us because we had budgeted for favors.   It was a little work, but what I didn't anticipate until much closer to the date is who would set it up and deliver all the jars.  Luckily we had hirer a wedding coordinator so I dropped off the boxes of it a few days before, but if you are diy, don't forget about the pain of setting up.

If you aren't set on it, don't bother.  They are getting a little overdone, but now that Pinterest is so popular, expect even less "original" ideas across the board!  :)

  • We had one.  I got the candy at BJs.  I bought the jars from other brides and also with coupons from AC Moore.  I sold the jars for the same I paid.  The candy wasn't too expensive, don't remember how much.  It was well received.  We only had a little left over and just gave it to the staff at the restaurant our reception was at.  For all I know they could've thrown it out but hopefully the wait staff got to enjoy it first.
