place cards and seating

I'm not doing assigned seating, but I would like to put certain people together at certain tables.  On my place cards was going to print their names and meal choices, should I put a table number on them as welll? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, that is assigning tables but not seats, which is what most brides do if they do assigned seating.

We have a lot of family from each side that the other has never met. Most of our family members have NOT met the other sides family. So we want to choose where everyone sits so that we can put people from each side to get people to meet each other. There will be table numbers on the table but we don't know whether to print names on cards and place them on table then have a seating chart at entrance of reception or if we should print names and table number only on card then let them find their table. Our biggest fear is we each have family members who are stubborn and have at other events moved their seat to another table because that is where they wanted to be. How do we go about this without our worst fear coming true?

We had place cards with name, meal choice and table number for my daughter's wedding.  I made the place card holder in the picture by taking a large picture frame covering the cardboard insert with fabric and then putting ribbons across it for the cards to hang on.  It was placed on an stand outside the reception room and people picked up their cards as they came in.  That way they knew which table they were at, but could pick their seat and we didn't have to make up seating charts.  This makes last minute changes easier too.
