Unique Centerpieces that are not Candles or Flowers?

Hi there! My fiance and I are looking for unique centerpiece ideas that do not involve flowers or candles.  We're going to be outdoors, and my allergies are bad enough already. Also - EVERYONE does flowers and candles. We don't want to do what everyone else does.

Colors are dark purple and red (David's Bridal Sangria & Apple) with grey/black/white accents. I was thinking maybe something with antiques, but don't know what. I do not have the time/energy/money to be crafty and paint 25 antiques in the same color, like I've seen others do. And yes, there will be 25 guest tables.

I also saw a book idea, but again, would have to have time to create book covers to make them match, and that's too much work for my insane schedule (matching encyclopedias is not personal enough for me, I'd choose books based on the stories, but then they wouldn't match).

Any ideas?

  • I would do birdcages, teapots, clocks, anything vintage and beautiful. Books are great but like you said, hard to find in those colors. Although you could go to the library and check out all the old leather books in black and red and that might work. I'm doing an alice in wonderland theme and my fiance and I have already got some centerpieces which just fit well, we got teapots and mismatched tea cups, little paint cans with white roses spilling out, pocket watches hanging from small table mirrors, etc. Just get crazy with it :)

  • I adore old books because I don't feel they have to match. The charm is in the mismatch. As PP said, birdcages can be really nice. Spray painted branches can look really chic. Three different sized wine bottles/vases can create interest at the center of the table. Depending on the style of your wedding vases with apples look really good. or sliced fruit in vases with water.
  • I have seen people use small trees or design things out of branches and twigs.

  • I'm not sure what your doing for favors, but there are some companies that do favors and centerpieces... at the end of the night, the guests would take a piece of the centerpiece home :) Here's a sample and you can do the boxes and ribbons in your colors :)

  • We are doing lanterns and birdcages with a rustic feel. There will also be artificial moss and succulents and white candles. Kind of like this without the box:

  • Depends on the theme of your wedding...but here are some ideas: paper lanterns, a frame with a photo of you and your FI, a glass vase with those battery operated twinkle lights, fruit or seashells in a bowl, a giant martini glass filled with water and a battery operated light inside (I saw this at a james bond inspired party it looked so cool)...like PP just get crazy with it!  :)
