opinion on room

I posted this on my local board but then thought this board might have some good advice for this question :)

Need some opinions:) My reception and wedding is at the Elms( if you are familiar with it.)  There are two ballrooms.  I have selected the smaller room because it has more character.  A fireplace, an outdoor lighted patio, a cool huge porch where you can put guest book, pictures, another bar if you want etc.  I picked this room planning on having more cocktail tables (not everyone will have a chair due to the smaller room). This way they can kinda walk outdoors or inside more of a "moving party". It might be a little tight with space due to around 215 on my guest list that I think will possibly attend.  Then I got to thinking maybe I should do the other room which is your basic ballroom that I do not love as much but everyone could have a table and chair.  We are doing hor d'ourves .  How important do you think it is for all your guests to have an actual seat?  Should I go with a more comfortable room for everyone or the room I love :).

Re: opinion on room

  • Are you having dinner at all or just hor d'ourves?
I guess I believe that every butt should have a seat, but thats just my opinion.
  • Wow, tought decision.  This is just my opinion, but I think that everyone should have a seat to sit in, set their things down, etc.  IMO, it is more comfortable and just easier for the guests.
  • I think everyone should have a seat. I wouldn't want to stand for a whole reception- how long is it? What are the hours?

Due to a medical problem I have trouble standing for much longer than 15 minutes (blood doesn't move arround like it should, and I'll pass out).  H and I would not be able to stay very long if I didn't have a place to sit.

  • You need  a seat for every rump.  Go with the bigger room.

  • And chairs aside, no one wants to be smashed like a sardine during a reception.  Guests' comfort should always come first.

  • I am in a similar predicament.  I booked a venue, but it's looking like we'll have more guests coming than anticipated.  Meaning, not enough chairs for everyone to sit at a table.  We're doing heavy hors d'oerves too.  Do you think I could have seating and some cocktail tables mixed?  Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!
  • I know this is a little different, but my high school prom, which included a buffet dinner, was served "cocktail style", meaning there were not enough seats to go around. it was HORRENDOUS. everyone grabbed their plates of food at once but then were standing around confused when there was no where to sit. people were stealing seats from one another and sitting on each other's laps. ok maybe adults wouldn't do that as much, butthey will still be upset about not having a seat. people want to sit down and eat even if it's just a small meal/snack, and people generally want to eat at the same time: right when they get there. please don't do this to your guests. guests will spending much more time looking at you than they would be looking at a fireplace anyhow. i'm sure you can find some lovely decor to make the plain room look fabulous.
  • You have to see how people almost kill just for a seat on the train- I could imagine how people would feel having to stand for four hours straight, and after having a few drinks.
